Another Time.

20 Aug 2010 — Henning Lahmann

Fielded is Chicago's Lindsay Anne Powell, and her dark experimental pop is playing just a little with recent "witch house" projects such as Zola Jesus: despite all the hauling, scary synth patterns and occasional goth elements like subtle chimes, Powell remains safely on a friendlier side.

Fielded's new album Terrageist will be put out by Catholic Tapes on September 7.

Sealings.

20 Aug 2010 — Henning Lahmann

This morning I've found a tape by Sealings in my mailbox (the physical one!) that Adam from UK's wonderful tiny Tye Die Tapes generously sent across the North Sea. The four track self-titled cassette features roughly ten minutes of harsh yet melodic fuzzed-out garage pop by Sealings members Michael and Liam who blissfully maltreat their stringed instruments while being accompanied by a slightly distorted drum machine. Brilliant.

Listen to the tape's fourth track below and don't forget to order the cassette over here.

Nitelab Lockbox.

19 Aug 2010 — Henning Lahmann

"The artifact that has come to be known in laboratory vernacular as the Nitelab Lockbox is an audio compendium utilized not only as a standard reference by scholars everywhere, it was in its own time a vehicle for the public promotion of something we know simply as The Time-Traveler's Pocket Guidebook. The unveiling of these findings occurred only a short time after the release of this recording, which was as a relevant sidenote connected to another collaborating organization known, mysteriously, as Mirror Universe Tapes. The enclosed titles have been coordinated with their respective rates of oscillation, a factor we have concluded to be in some way symbolically significant or communicative." (1)

In other, more earth-bound words, Savannah, Georgia's Paul M Goerner aka Magic Places is about to release his debut C30 tape Nitelab Lockbox via Mirror Universe, available for pre-order now and shipping from August 24. Listen to two of Magic Places' beat-driven and sample-laden gems below - The Bangkok Haircuts Society from the above mentioned cassette as well as the splendid and more ethereal tune The Past and Future Are One, which is in fact the finished version of Nitelab Lockbox's third track Preteritus Et Posterus Unum (obviously), to be featured on a forthcoming LP named The Time-Traveler's Pocket Guidebook.

A town up north.

16 Aug 2010 — Henning Lahmann

Hailing from the rather remote Burlington in Vermont is Alexandria Hall aka toothe ache., but this state of comparatively splendid isolation only appears to help her imagine the most beautifully hushed bedroom lullabies, sweet intimate gems for late hours that are still anything but an easy listen.

Tomorrow, San Francisco's adorable young label Father/Daughter Records will put out tooth ache.'s Skin b/w Lazarus 7 inch on strictly limited clear vinyl.

Moreover, Burlington's very own NNA Tapes has just released the Burlington, Vermont 8cs boxed set to give a little overview of the town's music scene.

Below, listen to both the single's a-side and the spellbindingly gorgeous Eurydice that Ms Hall has contributed to the set.

The shape of things to come.

16 Aug 2010 — Henning Lahmann

Without any doubt, Fort Collins, Colorado's great little cassette imprint Patient Sounds has become my favourite label in recent months, and after a series of wonderful releases by amazingly talented artists and a splendid summer comp (which is still available for free here), label master Matthew Sage has just posted a tentative list of forthcoming Patient Sounds releases, among them outputs by Lush Cola, Littoral Drift, Ambassador Engine (all three have been introduced on these pages before), Kites Sail High, and Mr Sage himself with no less than two M. Pyres double EPs.

Of course, earlier Patient Sounds cassettes are still available. Below, listen to two of the latest M. Pyres outputs - Gravity Deluxe is taken from his recent tour CDr E. ROAD, while Seaaes is the closer of what would be my favourite album of 2k10 if it hadn't been released last year (yes, sometimes I'm late). In any case, I can't recommend Apart the Echo enough and stress how much you need this tape.

New York summer nights.

15 Aug 2010 — Henning Lahmann

Last month, we introduced you to the spaced-out sounds of NYC resident Alec Feld, but apparently, the late night disco trips named Expensive Looks wouldn't complete Feld's restless creativity, so now he returns to our grateful attention with a new project he has recently started with his college pals: summery psych pop, tropical feelings for tepid nights on rooftops and in the cities' crowded parks, Golden Eye is a splendid soundtrack for these lazy days. According to Feld, we can expect a release later this year. Great things are coming our way.
