Thelma and Clyde’s upcoming debut

21 Oct 2010 — Tonje Thilesen

With their debut album While Line to be released (via Karmakosmetix Records) at the beginning of next month, the Oslo-based art electronica duo Thelma and Clyde mixes beautiful vocals of Hanne Kolstø with dark dub sequences, electropop and trip-hop-y beats, a little similar to the likes of Little Dragon, The Knife or at times even How To Destroy Angels. Download a couple of tracks from their upcoming debut and more off their Urørt site.

Golden Girl.

21 Oct 2010 — Henning Lahmann

Our very much admired LA dude Allister Izenberg returns with a new tune that sets sail into very promising new spheres: While his free Lonesome EP (introduced back in July) was a reduced piece with sparse instrumentation drenched in that certain kind of timid intimacy experienced by a lonely young boy in the huge metropolis, Golden Girl is significantly more mature, showing a remarkable shift regarding songwriting craft as well as sequencing and producing. The song features a very catchy guitar/sampled string section and Allister's signature falsetto-leaning voice, adding up to a perfectly lush folk pop song that still has a subtly melancholic undertone to it.

Fuck Society

20 Oct 2010 — Tonje Thilesen

Baksete is the moniker of singer-songwriter Einar Stray (whom we've recently declared our love to), an experimental electronica project he started back in 2008, heavily inspired by the dark/drag scene. From mixing shoegazing ambient with fast, Kim Hiorthøy like beats in Hello King, to messing around with ghost-like, dark synths in Fuck Society; Stray once again proves to us what kind of talented musician he really is — as well as confirming to us all that it's not only the indie genre he handles with glance.

All though we haven't heard any new tunes from Baksete other than the four tracks he've released for free at Urørt, I cross my fingers for this being a project that will be kept alive in the nearest future, and not just a passing phase of his musical career.

“We sing about ghosts and girls”

The young minds of the San Diego-based D/Wolves sure has come up with some incredibly catchy noise pop tunes for their upcoming full-lenght Freak Of Nature. All though still pretty rough, I absolutely think they have the potential of reaching hights with their raw and slightly The Morning Benders inspired sound.

Play whatever seems right. We’ll do it from there.

Give me a piece of Noah and The Whale's silent parts and the soft voice and sheer guitar playing of Einar Stray. Give me the nostalgia of The Waterboys and the honesty of Mutual Benefit. Stop thinking. This is a soundscape of floating, melodic silence, almost in liquid form. If you can't feel it yet, you haven't dived deep enough. Reach the bottom and let the landscape slowly build up around you.

Browsing Bandcamp with no particular genres in mind is indeed a treasure haunt at an island the size of the red sea, you'll never know what to find. Searching around the newest section can sometimes end in splendid, new discoveries, but also in tunes you've heard oh so many times before. This time I was lucky, I guess. NY-based Swamp Baby's sound is layered with stargazing melodies of such convenience and honesty it was for me, basically love at first listen. Despite the fact that the slowly uprising compositions seem clever and thoroughly considered, I also get the feeling that they're thinking somewhat like "let's play whatever seems right at this very moment and let it grow from there".

Their album All Fours, released back in April via the lovely Collar City Records, is available for $5 off their bandcamp here. Download some previews of the album exclusively below.

On Hiding.

17 Oct 2010 — Henning Lahmann

So this is something,
Never to be anymore.

Wellington's Matthew Holleman does not make music for the particularly light-hearted; but who is, after all. On Hiding, his new album which is sold exclusively via the artist's bandcamp, is among the most melancholic ones I've come across this year. Matt's songs express anxiety and fear and at times hopelessness, but at the same time the cathartic nature of the record, which "articulates an uncertain few years", never gets buried. With sparse instrumentation and vocals reminiscent of Justin Vernon's acclaimed works, On Hiding is an outstanding effort by an extraordinarily talented songwriter.

I'm still holding,
Wait till morning.
