Casino Gardens: “Bedroom Racetrack”.

07 Apr 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Our pals from down under at Rose Quartz kindly reminded us this morning that we wanted to prepare a little piece about Casino Gardens, the project of Columbus, Ohio native Byron Ferrari who we had introduced to our esteemed readership back in November (hence last century in internet time) when he was still recording under his Young Heat moniker. Anyway, a few weeks ago he sent over a few new tracks and announced his name change, along with the notification of a forthcoming release sometime soon. So, that particular thing has arrived now. The eleven track self-titled digital album is available over here and still sounds slightly like Matt Mondanile used to sound before he started sounding more like his band, and with summer ahead that is just the music we've been waiting for to take with us to the nearest park. Young Girls: “Mexico in December”.

06 Apr 2011 — Henning Lahmann
We've never been to Mexico, let alone in December, but the vibes we're receiving here are pretty much our thing so we might reconsider. Young Girls are a three-piece from Houston, Texas, and their brand new tune Mexico in December is the first track to surface from the outfit's forthcoming self-titled full-length. Crystal-clear harmonies on this honest sixties throwback summer tune to let us forget all the clouds out there on this early Wednesday morning. Young Girls - Mexico in December Here's another one that Noam of our beloved Don't Die Wondering had dug out last September. Six Pack Back Stab is just as nice and it had been self-released by the band on a 7 inch. Julian Lynch: “Back”.

05 Apr 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Here's a brand new track by our relentlessly adored Julian Lynch, taken from his forthcoming, highly anticipated album Terra, due April 26 via Underwater Peoples. Back features gentle, clear acoustic guitar chord progressions and Lynch's accustomed and beloved hazy and blurred vocalization. A very restrained and sparsely instrumented song with a brief, dense culmination towards the end, and a beautiful thing all along. Panda Teeth: “Arms & Hands”.

Madly in love with this brand new gem by the young "Milwaukee for now Minneapolis soon" über-talent Panda Teeth. Part of his Tundra Dubs debut cassette Sunshine Sin, Arms & Hands is a wonderfully meandering and finely tuned psych pop wonderland of a song, with nicely layered melodies and the heavy use of all kinds of pedals to give the track just the right amount of blurry, sundrenched feel to make you wish your new bike had already arrived so you could cruise through the city with this on your ears, over and over and over again. Grab Sunshine Sin in its delicious entirety digitally or on tape over here. Pretty Lightning: “An Old Wife’s Tale”.

04 Apr 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Usually playing drums and guitar in the "ritualistic neo hippie spook folk collective" Datashock (which also features Pascal Hector of Meudiademorte Records), Christian Berghoff and Sebastian Haas from the placid town of Saarbrücken in the deepest southwest of Germany have recently formed Pretty Lightning, a project likewise devoted to psychedelia yet more focused on pop structures (judging from the few cuts that have reached our ears so far) that all in all appears to be at least slightly reminiscent of earlier Yeasayer or, even more strikingly, Sleepy Sun. The great Toddfather seems to be a fan, as he has asked the duo to contribute to this year's most unanticipated and unlikely compilation, Olde English Spelling Bee's Should Have Been Dead on a Sunday Morning tribute to Creed. This morning, the duo's first original effort has surfaced: An Old Wife's Tale is a track off the already finished debut full-length There Are Witches in the Woods, for which the guys are currently looking for an imprint to put the thing out on vinyl. So if you run a label, contact us or the band immediately - cause if one song justifies any predictions, for sure you won't regret. Brut Choir: “Tesla” / “Orion”.

04 Apr 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Brut Choir is a Little Rock, Arkansas-based duo consisting of the friends Everett Hagen and Jimmy Spice. The outfit is all about dark, noise-infused and cold wave-informed synth tunes that rely on direct and sharp drum machine patterns, deep organs, storms of distortion and a cool voice in the background. After putting some older songs on their bandcamp recently, the guys were kind enough to send over some new, roughly mixed yet already absolutely intriguing material, among it the rather restrained Tesla and the more brutal and dense, forceful Orion. Brut Choir is about to self-release their stuff on tape and CD soon. Noah Wall: “The Station”.

04 Apr 2011 — Henning Lahmann
After This Love of Mine, here's the second single of Brooklyn-based weirdo kid and multi-instrumentalist Noah Wall from his upcoming album Hèloïse which is due June 1. The Station is quite a nice, slightly melancholic psych pop gem, pleasantly non-lo-fi and generally low key and unobtrusive in a comfortably gentle way. Citymouth: “Holodecker”.

04 Apr 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Nicely chopped'n'screwed beats and spaced-out synth jams in the vein of Flying Lotus et al. here by Seattle artist Citymouth. Being part of the delicious Dropping Gems collective, his brand new Holodecker EP seamlessly fits into the artist-run label's roster that we had first introduced last month when we featured the recent Gem Drops compilation. The Holodecker EP is the first sign of a forthcoming Citymouth full-length. Until then, dig this fine instrumental hip-hop and cop the whole thing for free over here. Available on cassette as well with an exclusive track.
