Ghibli: “Honest Effects”.

18 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Edmonton, Alberta's Thomas Michael, the artist formerly known as Jaded Hipster Choir who is now operating under the recording moniker Ghibli, right now is one of the few artists known to me in experimental music who actually still bother to explore new realms of sound and to transcend boundaries of genre and style while always staying on the firm grounds of purest and finest pop, which has always been and will always be the exact open-mindedness this blog was set up to discover. Thus it's a special pleasure for me to spread the news that Ghibli's debut full-length Pythia, "a modern ode to the Oracle of Delphi", is almost finished and will be dropped June 28. Stealing Sheep: “I Am the Rain”.

17 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
So, according to our sources this might actually become the next big thing and it's easy to see why: First, these three lovely girls are hailing from Liverpool, and as we all know England is the natural epicenter of hypes. Second, these three lovely girls are really really lovely. And third, Stealing Sheep's (oh that name!) folk nicely sits somewhere between Mountain Man and some rather Brooklyn-ish weirdo pop (think Chairlift, or Au Revoir Simone with that wonderful e-piano in the beginning of Your Saddest Song), with the girls' pretty stunning three-part harmonies working as the breathtaking focal point of each song. The overall tone is catchy, pure sugary indie pop on the surface that still barely manages to cover all those dark and twisted edges that are never too far away. Basically, this music is so well-crafted that in our eyes, at least Stealing Sheep would deserve to become the next big thing (See? We said it). The trio's latest 7 inch I Am the Rain was released yesterday on London's new boutique imprint Idle Fret. Get it now via Rough Trade. Feel Alright: “Hahahahahahaha”.

16 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Feel Alright is the brainchild of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania via Alberta artist Craig Fahner, a gentle reconstruction of avant-la-lettre garage pop that conflates at least three decades of raw, distinctly lo-fi guitar music that despite all its crudeness invariably neglects attitude in favor of classicist harmonization (a feature that in some respects leaves Fahner's music not too far away from Christian Richer's magnificent The Haiduks who we had featured last month). Feel Alright's debut Hahahahahahaha, recorded as a four-piece, will be released this week as a C20 tape by Montréal imprint Planet Of The Tapes. Below, you can preview/download the wonderfully lush tunes Winter Goth and Oahu Ohio. Backward-leaning without too obviously imitating the past, and just perfect for everything you may be up to this summer. Midnight Television: “Midnight Television”.

16 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Kansas-based tape imprint Beer On The Rug digitally dropped Midnight Television's self-titled debut this morning, and though the label folks admit that they don't know much about the artist except for the fact that he's hailing from Texas, it's more than obvious that there was no way of not putting this out anyway. The EP ends after a mere ten minutes, but the seven sonic snippets are some very intriguing pieces of mellow, heavily 80s-infused hypnagogia, and with titles such as Channel Surfing or Commercial Dreams it indeed is an absolutely appropriate soundtrack for lonely late night zapping excursions. Get the whole thing now over here. A small run of pro-imprinted/pro-duplicated tapes is on the way. Mothers of Gut: “Wizard Tree”.

13 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Los Angeles-based psychedelic rock outfit Mothers of Gut, originally the project of lone kraut devotee Aaron Freeman, recently released their sophomore album Unking via Californian imprint Family Time Records. The 12 inch is a dense exploration into classic psych sounds, heavily informed by 70s Golden State rock'n'roll that is magnificently transposed into 21st century music. Listen to album closer Wizard Tree below and order the record over here. Limited run of 500. Panabrite: “Over Dunes”.

12 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Seattle-based experimental ambient/drone artist Norm Chambers aka Panabrite is among the most prolific musicians I know of. According to his Soundcloud, there are no less than ten LPs, cassettes, split tapes or collaborative efforts scheduled for 2011, yet still despite its way of constructing wide-spanning, meandering soundscapes, Panabrite's music is not about repetition. The latest example to showcase Chambers' terrific work with analogue synthesizers and drum machines is Omni Center, a CDr released soon via Sturmundrugs Records, a piece of expanding layers of synth patterns and occasional guitar interplays that build a deeply mesmerizing wall of sound, resulting in an utterly satisfying aural experience. Pre-order Omni Center here. Panabrite - Over Dunes Read more → Seattle-based experimental ambient/drone artist Norm Chambers aka Panabrite is among the most prolific musicians I know of.
