Premiere: Kohwi - “Reeling the Warmth (Rmx)”.

12 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Ann Arbor, Michigan electro wunderkind Cory Levinson aka Kohwi's incredible full-length Hidden Trees was released late last year on cassette via the stellar Wonder Beard Tapes (and the tape is still available over here). And though y'all know we're really into cassettes here at NFOP, the fact that Kohwi's fine work is about to get an additional vinyl treatment is nonetheless exciting news. This early summer, Black Tent Press will re-release Hidden Trees as an LP (that's the cover art above) with a bonus CD that includes a couple of remixes. One of them is Our Brother The Native's slightly and totally aptly woozy rework of Reeling the Warmth, right now exclusively available below. Pre-order the LP here. Just A Number 05272011: “He Didn’t Want a Lovesong (Rmx)”.

12 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
So while we're still completely clueless what's gonna happen on May 27, Just A Number 05272011 keeps on building up anticipation with this gloomy, slow-burning remix of He Didn't Want a Lovesong that if anything justifies every degree of premature excitement. Video: Raw Thrills feat. Maria Minerva - “City Lights”.

12 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Zak's unstoppable. While we're at it, here's also the brand new video for City Lights, another thrilling collaboration between our darlings Zak Mering and Maria Minerva. Compared to the rather humble and spontaneous late-night chatroom banger Ooh, Zak (Ma-Ma-Maria), this one's almost polished, but in any case it shows how surprisingly well this transatlantic artistic relationship works. It's perfect. Read more → Zak's unstoppable. While we're at it, here's also the brand new video for City Lights, another thrilling collaboration between our darlings Zak Mering and Maria Minerva. Video: Greatest Hits - “L Train Girl”.

12 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Zak Mering's main (?) project Greatest Hits had us dancing all night long through 2010 since the release of the duo's (Tyler Thacker is the other member) stellar Danse Pop 7 inch on Olde English Spelling Bee. Now, the weirdo/retro dance project finally has another single forthcoming, Girl Crazy will be out May 30 via Paris, France imprint Maman Records. The 7 inch is going to feature two tracks, Funky Dame and L Train Girl, and as video art has always been playing an important role in Zak's oeuvre, both tunes will be blessed with accompanying pieces of moving pictures. The first video to drop is the one for L Train Girl, and as expected it turns out to be a very d.i.y., very charming reverence to that certain L 14th Street-Canarsie Local from Chelsea to the southwestern realms of Brooklyn - including station name shout-outs, subway dancing and chance encounters with all kinds of commuter train weirdos. A metropolitan fairytale. Video: Ela Orleans - “Apparatus”.

11 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Here's the brand new, wonderful new video for Ela Orlean's Apparatus, a track taken from her recent cassette NEO PI-R on Clan Destine that we had written about late last month. As usual an otherworldly, mind-altering visual and aural experience, and just another reason to head over here to order your copy of NEO PI-R. Premiere: Femminielli / Araignée Split 7”.

10 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
The slick minimal synth work of Montréal resident Bernardino Femminielli is without doubt one of my favorite discoveries of 2011 so far, with his recent cassette Carte Blanche Aux Désirs, released in March via Los Discos Enfantasmes, probably being the most outstanding pure synth extravaganza I've come across in a very long time. In particular Estados Alterados, the tape's lead-off track which we'd premiered back in February, is still on constant repeat with its upbeat vibes of ultimate seduction. The two tracks on his new 7 inch which will drop soon via rad Montréal label Fixture Records are both more on the slow, almost ambient side of things while still managing to dip even deeper into the gloomy realms of sleazy late night erotica. Especially b-side Silvia, recorded under the Araignée moniker which essentially is Femminielli's side project together with his producer and friend Dominic Vanchesteing, is a terrific trip into a world of forbidden fruits with some heavily mind-melting synth patterns and a slowly deluding drum machine beat. Pre-order the 7 inch right now over here. Update: We had accidentally posted the wrong Femminielli track. The one you could hear until now was not Chauffeur. Anyway, it's fixed now. Apologies for any inconvenience. Laurel Halo: “Heuristic Gag Factor”.

10 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Here's another track from Laurel Halo's new release on Vermont imprint NNA Tapes, Antenna. Heuristic Gag Factor is a slow-burning, subtle beat monster, nothing you'd dance to boisterously but a very intriguing piece of noisy electronica nonetheless. The Young Sinclairs: “Running Kind”.

10 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
They say today is gonna be this year's warmest day so far, with temperatures well above mid summer average. So, to cool things off before they get too sticky let's turn to this brand new tune by Roanoke, Virginia quintet The Young Sinclairs. Their cover version of the Merle Haggard classic Running Kind is all nice and easy, slightly psychedelic folk, the perfect summery breeze just in time for the arrival of the happy season. The Young Sinclairs' digital album Don't Believe In Demos Vol. 1 is out today via Planting Seeds Records.
