Cushion: “The Oceanographer (ft. Golden Ego)”.

09 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Riding some seriously chill waves here tonight on this distinctly laid-back lo-fi tune by Nebraska native Jake Hansen aka Cushion featuring the vocals of Nevada City, California's Golden Ego. Sure this ain't chillwave and we're glad about it, but nonetheless we got some honestly childhood memory-evoking piece of sonic art wrapped around our cerebrum right now, which in fact might be the result of the combination of The Oceanographer with this strangely apt racetrack video by Manchester's Dean Jagger. We don't know, but we think we'll go for another spin. Cushion - The Oceanographer (ft. Ezekiel Honig: “Subverting the Memory of Your Surroundings”.

09 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Last week, experimental label Type Records released New York minimal artist Ezekiel Honig's latest full-length Folding In On Itself, a splendid collection of ten ambient pieces, deeply contemplating and relaxing while at the same time being incredibly sophisticated and ambitiously constructed. Honig's music is probably the best example I've encountered lately to show how much you can achieve with astoundingly few means. The slowly meandering tracks disseminate a mildly melancholic atmosphere, seemingly en passant but without ever losing focus or carrying the listener away. Listen to the beautiful Subverting the Memory of Your Surroundings below, or stream the whole album over at Type's Soundcloud. Sleep ∞ Over: “Casual Diamond (Physical Therapy Remix)”.

09 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Brooklyn imprint Hippos In Tanks has just announced the signing of off-kilter disco enigma Physical Therapy. There won't be a release before fall, but to appropriately celebrate the occasion already the nice folks have dropped the artist's remix of Casual Diamond by Austin's Sleep ∞ Over, one of our favorite artists of the ever-growing and ever-improving HIT roster. And an essential remix it is. Lee Noble: “Carve an Image”.

06 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Now that Los Angeles resident and long-standing NFOP darling Lee Noble is finally getting the props his fascinating work so much deserves, we've been more than delighted this morning to see that the dude is already about to drop his next cassette. Persona will be released by Bridgetown next month (most likely), and below you can listen to the album's first track to have surfaced. With its slow ambient patterns and wide spanning soundscapes, Carve an Image has all the splendid features that make Noble such an extraordinary artist. Grimes: “Heartbeats (Laurel Halo Remix)”.

06 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Just accidentally stumbled across this spellbinding Laurel Halo treatment of Grimes' Heartbeats (taken from Halfaxa), and since we adore both artists and it appears to be the perfect day for amazing remixes, this slow-burning ambient jam is something you definitely shouldn't miss. Gatekeeper x Nowa Huta x Gatekeeper.

Two of our favorite Merok artists, Chicago/Brooklyn synth outfit Gatekeeper and London cold wave project Nowa Huta, have taken the day off to remix each other, with absolutely terrific results, just as you'd expect: Gatekeeper - Serpent (Nowa Huta Remix) Nowa Huta - Gang Waves (Gatekeeper Remix) Read more → Two of our favorite Merok artists, Chicago/Brooklyn synth outfit Gatekeeper and London cold wave project Nowa Huta, have taken the day off to remix each other, with absolutely terrific results, just as you'd expect: Gatekeeper - Serpent (Nowa Huta Remix) Nowa Huta - Gang Waves (Gatekeeper Remix)

Inga Copeland (Hype Williams): “Trample”.

06 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
So this appears to have become the weapon of choice du jour of our ever-enigmatic London/Berlin superduo Hype Williams, to drop tunes without further ado and to let us believe those are Inga Copeland solo works. On the other hand, of course, this might just as well simply be the truth. In any case, just as with Can We, the track we'd posted a short while ago, stylistically speaking this is a Hype Williams tune, moreover, this one's a seriously brilliant Hype Williams tune, in fact the best I've come across in quite a while.
