Premiere: Pillars and Tongues - “The Making Graceful”.

25 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Originally Chicago-based neo-folk outfit Pillars and Tongues are about to drop The Pass and Crossings, their third full-length album in total and the second that's being released via fabulous San Francisco boutique label Empty Cellar Records. As with the trio's efforts before, the new piece is a heavy thing to digest, but one that will unfold its grandeur little by little if you're willing to stick to it all the way. Employing mainly violin, double bass, drums, bells and occasionally organs, and relying on the marvelous baritone of Mark Trecka, Pillars and Tongues' music always has one foot in the avant-garde, while never completely abandoning pop, which in this case is gloomy, dark, and dreamy, almost cinematic, evoking pictures of lost and doomed landscapes. The Pass and Crossing is close to nothing contemporary, a truly outstanding piece of sonic art. The Pass and Crossings is out June 28. Pre-order here. Save MJ MJ Records (mp3 exclusive).

24 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
So here's the thing, those incredibly nice guys you see in the picture above, Andy Todryk and Charlie Collier from MJMJ (Two Michael Jordans) Records, recently moved from their home in Eau Claire, Wisconsin to LA to finally be closer to their FMLY, but on their way to the promised land some unchill bro broke into their van and stole just about everything, clothes, computers, music gear. But instead of simply lying down crying and lamenting, the two have decided to put up a Kickstarter project so friendly folks can jointly fund the rescue/resurrection of their wonderful little label and help them put Vacation Dad's (Andy's project) 12 inch on vinyl. By pledging, you can get your hands on the more than amazing Save MJ MJ Records double cassette compilation which is featuring 31 songs, all by really amazing artists and no less than 25 of them new or exclusive (you can already stream the whole thing here and here). Also, to make things even more exciting, Andy was kind enough to send over this exclusive Vacation Dad jam named I'll Always Find You, an utterly beautiful and very personal tune that in fact is my favorite VD song to date. So enjoy this little masterpiece, and don't forget to help MJ MJ Records. Mavis The Dog: “The Second Album”.

23 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Mavis The Dog is some dude from Philly named Scott Olsen who's making some totally weird but also totally awesome lo-fi jams. He hasn't told me anything and there really ain't that much to it so what else should I say except that I'm absolutely stoked right now on the lazy, sundrenched suburban early afternoon melancholia that's dripping out of every note on Olsen's "second album" which is up for free right here. Wind in Willows.

23 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Anton Filatov aka Wind in Willows, hailing from Russia's Republic of Karelia, is one of the most interesting yet least exposed contemporary psychedelic ambient artists. Studying physics and astronomy while living on the outskirts of Petrozavodsk "basically right in the forest", this young man appears to amalgamate all features essential to come up with deeply enchanting, ethereal pieces of drone that are at the same time mathematically exact and crafted with an immense intent on even the least obvious details in his music. His debut cassette Elephant Dreams which was released by Karelian imprint Full of Nothing is long sold out but can be downloaded for free over here. This July, Filatov will have a split release with Saint Petersburg artist Bedroom Bear (who we had introduced in early April) on our beloved LaGrange, Georgia cassette label Hooker Vision. Wind in Willows - Aurora Hover (Excerpt) (from his forthcoming Hooker Vision split with Bedroom Bear) Wind in Willows - Sea of Tranquility (Excerpt) (from Elephant Dreams) Read more → Anton Filatov aka Wind in Willows, hailing from Russia's Republic of Karelia, is one of the most interesting yet least exposed contemporary psychedelic ambient artists. Pariah Carey: “Garden Dog”.

23 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Burbank, California imprint Deathbomb Arc is about to drop the latest effort by Jheri Evans' gothic drone playground project Pariah Carey. The C20 tape Haokah comprises two wide-spreading excursions into deeply troubling and shattering surges of harsh noise made up of heavily layered synth pads, only sparsely easing tension with interspersed fragments of simple and reduced hints of casiotone melodies. Listen to b-side Garden Dog below, a terrific ten-minute nightmare that would be the apt battlefield score for some interstellar alien strife in the nearer future. The cassette is up for pre-oder now over here. Read more → Burbank, California imprint Deathbomb Arc is about to drop the latest effort by Jheri Evans' gothic drone playground project Pariah Carey. The NFOP Guide to Primavera Sound 2011.

23 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
It's that time again: Barcelona is calling Europe's young and pretty for the continent's most exciting festival. Primavera Sound 2011 will happen from Thursday, May 26, till Saturday, May 28, at Barcelona's Parc del Fòrum. As usual, Pitchfork, Vice, ATP, and Rockdelux will curate part of the amazing programme, all in all presenting more than 126 bands. To shed some light on the just about overwhelming lineup, we've decided to help our readers out with a compilation of NFOP-approved artists to make getting along during the three days a little easier. Of course, we wouldn't necessarily say that you should ignore all other bands. And as you'll see for yourself, there still remain some difficult choices to be made (Ford & Lopatin or Deerhunter? Kurt Vile or Gang Gang Dance? Prince Rama or Swans? God we don't know). Our schedule can be downloaded here in a neatly arranged pdf. Please note that the timetable is subject to correction. Below, you'll also find two mixes of artists we're particularly stoked to see in Barcelona, we hope you'll enjoy. Last, we're delighted to see that our favorite radio station in the world WFMU is again going to broadcast a couple of live sets from the festival ground. So if you happen to be stuck in the US or anywhere else that is not Barcelona, make sure to tune in. All that being said - if you feel like saying hello or wanna grab a beer, just hit us up. For tracklist and download head over here and here. An NFOP-approved Schedule: If you like what you see, you can print the whole thing via the handy pdf that's ready for download right here.
