Apache Jackson: “Hotline Getaway”.

20 Jul 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Pretty stoked right now by the "fractured pop songs from a parallel or hovering perspective", in the words of Portland, Oregon resident Apache Jackson. Sleazy late night, deep and dark, 80s dripping extravaganza exemplified in Hotline Getaway, the opening jam of Jackson's debut EP Soul Damage, available now via bandcamp. A second EP with "aggressive and sexy saxophone solos" will follow pretty soon, and a full-length is scheduled for this fall. Stay tuned. The Band in Heaven: “If You Only Knew”.

19 Jul 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Orlando, Florida shoegaze/dream pop duo The Band in Heaven returns with two fresh gems, and it's a delight for us to see that the two have moved forward a few years, now being on a heavily mid to late-90s, densely psychedelia-infused trip (complete with sitar) that brings to mind later Oasis antics (only slightly more slowed-down and with less ragged working class euphoria), who of course have always been, as we all know, on a serious backward-leaning nostalgia trip themselves - which leaves us here with a retro late 60s/early 70s-inspired piece from 2011 viewed through a 1997 lense. Cheer up, Mr Reynolds! If You Only Knew is taken from the outfit's forthcoming cassette Seven Minutes In Heaven on NorseKorea Tapes which may be streamed over at bandcamp and is up for pre-order now over here. Horquillas: “Yo My Life Away”.

18 Jul 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Dracula Horse CEO Brandon Ian Biondo kindly told me that he'd have to kill me if he gave me more information about this mysterious project named Horquillas that he posted on his label's tumblr last week, but the video for What Will I Say Then suggests they're up to no good. In any case, the outfit's latest tune Yo My Life Away is by far this year's dopest slacker hymn, so whatever this might be exactly (apparently there's gonna be a whole album by the end of this week) they totally got me already. Water Borders: “What Wiwant”.

14 Jul 2011 — Henning Lahmann
It's only July but I think it's already fairly safe to say that in 2011, Tri Angle Records has taken over the top spot as most influential independent label from Olde English Spelling Bee - perhaps alongside Hippos In Tanks. What Wiwant is another track taken from the San Francisco duo Water Borders' forthcoming full-length Harbored Mantras, due October 10. The track's dark and woozy electronics perfectly show how seamlessly Water Borders fit into our much adored Tri Angle roster. Hype Williams: “H.I.M”.

14 Jul 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Incredible new Hype Williams jam that just emerged out of the blue, recorded during the duo's sessions for this year's Hippos In Tanks release One Nation but temporarily lost due to "Denna's fault". Anyway, here it is. In related news, Denna aka Inga Copleland aka whoever's solo project, responsible for one of the best tracks of 2011 so far, seems to be for real after all. Today, Boomkat announced the release of a white-labeled, untitled Inga Copeland 12 inch. Pre-order it here. Halasan Bazar: “You Will Know”.

13 Jul 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Absolutely thrilled by this Danish version of relentlessly enthusiastic psychedelic folk, brought to us by this bunch of five weirdos who once started a band in outer space and then moved to Copenhagen, which is close enough to the moon. I didn't come up with this, it's in the press release so it must be true. Anyway, Halasan Bazar is the name of these wonderful oddballs, and the lush, sundrenched song You Will Know is their first-ever official single, dropped soon on 7 inch via the brand new and pretty exciting, Norwegian-run and Berlin-based (we obviously dig this combination) boutique imprint OOAOO (say "woooah"). You can pre-order the single now over here. Coming on "space dust organge" vinyl and limited to 250 numbered copies, you sure won't wanna miss that.
