Terrors: “Lagan Qord”.

24 Aug 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Over the course of a couple of months last year, I had an extended yet sadly unfinished e-mail conversation with Elijah Forrest that revolved around his vagabond-esque life of wandering around the US, future plans for artistic endeavors and of course his musical existence as Terrors, the project he's been pursuing since the age of 14 that had resulted in a few tapes on his own imprint Cavelife as well as on Monorail Trespassing and Bathetic. Elijah told me about a new single that was planned to be released last December, and a new full-length on Bridgetown Records early this year. Though I don't exactly know what happened (after all, it appeared to me that his chosen life of peregrination and restlessness wasn't the simplest fate), I guess both releases never came about eventually. However, about a month ago at least there finally was another "official" Terrors release when Weird Forest dropped Lagan Qord, though in a way it might just as well be deemed a reissue, as the LP is a collection of Elijah's songs from the last four years that had been scattered across his various, mostly out-of-print cassettes. The record itself is one of immaculate, most fragile magic, with songs that in every single painfully uncovered note reveal a profound sadness, a sorrowfulness so bleak and honest that the music occasionally becomes an uneasy listen, despite every song's seamless beauty. More than once the listener is left spellbound, hoping that the artist nevertheless is doing alright. Lagan Qord is without any doubt one of the most breathtaking and moving records I've come across in a while. Terrors - Coffin Tongue Terrors - Withdrawing Lagan Qord can still be ordered via Boomkat. Apart from that, fortunately it seems like life indeed has been going on for Elijah Forrest this year, as we've stumbled across a project named Lolly Gesserit recently, which turned out to be his new and current recording moniker. It's nothing like Terrors, all fuzzed-out, mostly atonal tape manipulation, but in no way less stunning and in fact apparently also born out of resignation, as in Elijah's own words it's the "byproduct of a demoralizing visit to the Golden State". Lolly Gesserit - Reinstall Windows (Side B): Reinstall Windows has been released on San Francisco imprint Beach House. Video Premiere: Holy Spirits - “Handmade Sun”.

23 Aug 2011 — Henning Lahmann
We've already seen Coma Cinema's marvelous video this morning, and apparently today is a good day for visual magic, as here's another breathtaking instance of moving art: Alistair Legrand (the brother of Beach House singer Victoria) has directed the video for "Handmade Sun" by Brooklyn-based outfit Holy Spirits, the otherworldly beautiful track from the group's split with Mutual Benefit that we had featured a while back. The video perfectly accompanies the lush and sublime dream-pop vibes of the song, a wonderful little fairytale about a little girl and her scarecrow friend, with meadows and fields and forests and fireworks. The Mutual Spirits 12 inch is still available via Father/Daughter Records and should be ordered over here. Video: Coma Cinema - “Business As Usual”.

23 Aug 2011 — Tonje Thilesen
We won't have to think twice to say that our favourite pop genius Coma Cinema has gotten some of the prettiest music videos around, much of it thanks to the one-of-a-kind director and videographer Tyler T Williams, whom has been the brain behind the visuals for Blue Suicide, Blissed and our own definite favourite, Only. Mr. Cothran has just headhunted another video talent (or, as we would like to think at least), Micah Van Hove of Umuima, to do video for the gorgeous track Business As Usual, taken from his second full-lenght Blue Suicide which dropped earlier this year. Have a glance at the stunning result below. Born Gold: “Alabaster Bodyworlds”.

22 Aug 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Ok well, you might think we're a little late on this though in fact we're not (after all we knew before you, ha!), but all that sudden sensational outburst after the official announcement of our dearest friends' Gobble Gobble's name change into Born Gold has left us bedazzled and overwhelmed for a few days. However, the times of speechlessness are over and to us it appears to be just the right day to reconfirm our delight regarding the Canadian weirdo pop project's new artistic direction, perfectly insinuated with Alabaster Bodyworlds, a sparkling modern dance anthem dripping with unrestrained euphoria that leaves us wriggling in sheer excitement. Born Gold's debut full-length Bodysounds will enter Earth's orbit soon via the gentle folks over at Crash Symbols and the group's own imprint Hovercraft. Pre-order the magic right now over at Insound. Pleq/Lauki: “The Gravity Lens” + “My Piano Is Broken (Rain Again)” video.

22 Aug 2011 — Tonje Thilesen
The Polish electronic/experimental artist Bartosz Dziadosz aka Pleq seem to be a relatively busy producer these days, recently not only dropping exciting, new collaboration projects, but also the incredibly stunning music video for My Piano Is Broken (Rain Again) (with Anna Rose Carter) below, made my no other than master of the arts Volkan Ergen. Pleq's newest project however entitled 'The Gravity Lens' is a collaboration between himself and Barcelona based Mikel Lauki, resulting in a 21-minute long cinematic ambient/drone track evolving from a lush dream into a frightening nightmare of a dying city — much of it thanks to those fizzing field recordings. The CDR is limited to 50 physical copies only which can be ordered right here, while you can grab the EP for an affordable price via bandcamp. (Also, we/I honestly believe this might be one of the best music videos of 2011, so don't miss it.) Arc Light: “Psychics”.

19 Aug 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Take a listen to the first single from Ryan Gabel aka Arc Light's forthcoming full-length Bronze Fortune. Psychics is a woozy yet comparatively glaring (no, I don't think this is a contradiction) take on restrained cold wave, with Gabel's signature grim crooning even more hidden behind a curtain of layered synths than ever before. Very promising. Read more → Take a listen to the first single from Ryan Gabel aka Arc Light's forthcoming full-length Bronze Fortune. Video: Rrose Tacet - “The Dark”.

19 Aug 2011 — Henning Lahmann
As usual wonderfully crafted video collage by NFOP favorite The Tearist, this time for Parisian experimental folk quartet Rrose Tacet. The Dark is the very pop-infused title track from the group's new four-track EP, a lush tune that's not at all shying away from grandiosity. Rainbow Chan: “Star Picking”.

18 Aug 2011 — Tonje Thilesen

Gentle guitar playing, quirky, electronic tweaks and a gorgeous, mellow voice and there you have it: the young singer/songwriter and musician Rainbow Chan from Sydney, Australia. With a camera in the one hand and a field recorder in the other, Chan went on a produced material for her upcoming full-lenght in various places in Europe: cafés in Reykjavik, at the London metro or at tiny hostels in the rural city life of Paris, which finally made her all the way to one of the remaining six finalists of FBI Radio's Northern Lights competition 2011. Pick up some free sounds over at her soundcloud, and don't forget to vote for her right here. Rainbow Chan - Star Picking Read more →
