Catamaran: “Land Jewel”.

09 Dec 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Seriously, so good to have MJ MJ Records back in business - this week, the dudes over at the Los Angeles boutique imprint, that had faced impending demise earlier this year after the owners had been robbed, dropped yet another amazing cassette, Catamaran's self-titled debut effort. Catamaran is an incredibly talented young producer from NYC whose tight beats are equally laid-back and frantic, nicely blending lush dream pop elements and dancefloor-ready rhythm sections, as showcased on our favorite track "Land Jewel". Order the tape now over here. Video premiere: Koudlam - “Alcoholic’s Hymn”.

08 Dec 2011 — Tonje Thilesen
We feel quite honored to be able to premiere the newest found-footage creation of none other than Jamie Harley, whom has been quite busy with crafting videos for the likes of How To Dress Well, CANT, Clams Casino and Twin Shadow this past year (which you obviously should know by now). This time, Jamie has once again picked Paris' Koudlam on the menu, bringing the title track of this year's Alcoholic's Hymn EP back to life with footage from the 1962 documentary Mondo Cane ("Dog World"). Strange, psychedelic and as always: strangely captivating. Watch below, and don't forget to snatch a copy of the EP here. Altar Eagle: “Carousel Ocean”.

08 Dec 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Listen to the gorgeous first track off Nightrunners, the second full-length by Altar Eagle, the duo comprising Foxy Digitalis/Digitalis Recordings head Brad Rose aka The North Sea and his wife Eden Hemming-Rose. "Carousel Ocean" is a lush, bright, tinkling pop song that slowly reveals layer over layer of crystal-clear chord progressions, carried by Eden's beautiful vocalization and staggeringly finished with an amazing analogue synth solo by Brad. Nightrunners is due sometime in spring 2011 and will be released via Type, which had already released the duo's first effort Mechanical Gardens in 2010. Video: Cough Cool - “Lately”.

08 Dec 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Philadelphia dude Dann Svizeny aka Cough Cool has finally dropped his highly anticipated full-length Lately, a wonderful gathering of late afternoon fuzz-dripping lo-fi slacker anthems custom-made for simple and unenthused window-gazing while you're stuck musing about the shortcomings and hopelessness of the times we're living in. In other words, the perfect record for 2011's crisis of late capitalism. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, just watch the beautifully grainy, brand new video for the LP's title track: Lately is out December 13 on Bathetic. The first 50 orders will receive the complimentary Basement cassette that we'd reported about previously. Stream the album in its entirety below. Beyond: “Untitled V”.

07 Dec 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Those of you who follow this blog will be aware of two things, first: We absolutely love what the guys over at Minneapolis-based label Moon Glyph are doing (as far as we know it's actually basically only one guy, the man himself Steve Rosborough), and second: Moon Glyph has had an absolutely outstanding year, with a steady flow of amazing releases on tape and vinyl. No Man Moves marks the imprint's last release for 2011, and it's just another stellar missive, six untitled synth disruptions by Chicago's J. Shaver of NFOP favorites Deep Earth. Expansive arrangements that keep lingering between splendid contemplation and the dance floor, every track on the cassette is truly unique, not far from the Chicago school of 80s-induced synth music of which his other project is one of the leading proponents yet undoubtedly a work that deserves to stand on its own. Recommended. Order No Man Moves now over here. Keep Shelly In Athens: “Struggle With Yourself”.

07 Dec 2011 — Henning Lahmann
One of our favorite beat-oriented dream pop artists, sublime and enigmatic Greece duo Keep Shelly In Athens, has just released a proper EP named Campus Martius via Planet Mu. Below, you may listen to the closing track "Struggle With Yourself". Quite different than what we're used to hear from the two, actually. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing of course. Video Premiere: The Pheromoans - “The Bovril Boys”.

07 Dec 2011 — Henning Lahmann
The lush if ramshackle garage punk of UK southwest outfit The Pheromoans has been much-acclaimed for a good while now already, well deserved after a constant stream of noteworthy releases on beloved imprints such as Night-People, Sweet Rod, OneC, and Scotch Tapes. The group's latest offering Darby Joan & Fosters has just been dropped by Clan Destine Records on shiny black vinyl, eleven tracks of not-to-be-missed excursions into straight and unaltered guitar smashing, including "The Bovril Boys", a weird and amazing proto-ballade that I assume only true Brits are able to conceive, incredibly melodic and curiously beautiful yet at the same time strangely unsettling as singer R. Walker en passant tells a little story about the eponymous bunch of lads. Masterfully and aptly visualized by Ela Orleans, a perfect collage to picture the music's disillusioned undertone. The Darby Joan & Fosters LP is out now on Clan Destine Records. Take a glimpse at the title track as well: Read more → The lush if ramshackle garage punk of UK southwest outfit The Pheromoans has been much-acclaimed for a good while now already, well deserved after a constant stream of noteworthy releases on beloved imprints such as Night-People, Sweet Rod, OneC, and Scotch Tapes.
