Whatever reality might be.

Kudos to the wonderful folks over at No Pain In Pop for directing our undivided attention toward London's latest dream-pop sensation Echo Lake, a band that started as a guy's solo bedroom project late last year, but has by now been expanded into a quintet.

Blurred guitar patterns guide our paths through tunes that sound like the perfect fusion of early new wave and latter day shoegaze, with a girl's ethereal voice drenched in reverb beautifully uttering something we're probably not supposed to understand. There are so far only three songs available, and two of them have not yet left demo stage (the exception is In Dreams), but the splendour Echo Lake are adumbrating makes us curious about the things to come.

And all of a sudden, he's everybody's darling. Today, even the guys at Pitchfork seem to like him, though up to now they never seemed particularly fond of Ariel Marcus Rosenberg's efforts. Anyway, it's never too late to change your mind. In any case, Ariel Pink and his Haunted Graffiti's upcoming album Before Today (due 8 June on 4AD) is highly anticipated by pretty much everyone right now. And just in time before next month's release, the great FACT Magazine has published its mix #152, compiled by Ariel Pink together with his band. And it's a real delight, 50 minutes of weirdo pop from all over the planet. Check the whole playlist here.

Be sure to download it soon, as it will only be available for three weeks, and you don't want to miss it, believe me.

Do believe the hype.

I just wanted to very briefly announce that NFOP has been admitted to the Hype Machine. For you this means that from now on you can listen to all the songs I post here via their page, which includes the possibility to create a playlist of your own by "loving" the tunes you dig (i.e. clicking on the heart next to the title), if you create or already have an account. Moreover, for those of you with a Last.fm profile, listening via the Hype Machine will scrobble once you've set it up.

Read more about the Hype Machine and how it works here.

You will find NFOP on hypem.com right here and you can follow it by clicking on the heart next to the blog's name (again, of course you'll need to create an account first).

Back at the lo-fi shelf. I don't know anything about Bingo Pajamas except for the fact that hiding behind this alias is Niki Smith, supposedly the girl in the picture above that I took from her myspace (no clue who the guy might be), who lives in Brooklyn, which most likely makes her one of the thousands of talented and untalented young musicians gathering on the western shores of Long Island, and though Ms. Smith hasn't got a label apparently she has recorded an album, presumably on her own in her bedroom, on an old 8-track tape recorder, named Shidiot, and it's just great though I really don't know where to buy or order it, but eventually all this fact-finding and humble guessing isn't that important, cause all I wanted to say is that her song Revenge of the Sun is so innocently beautiful and quiet that you seriously should listen to it right now.

Actually hailing from Woodstock, NY, Casey Chandler calls himself Galapaghost when he's composing moony folk songs that take us to wildflower meadows in hazy sunshine. Casey's got a bachelor's degree in music production, a feature that clearly separates his songs from most of the distinctly lo-fi artists running around in the Big Apple right now. The tune Human Unkind, posted below, is a slow beauty, with Casey's fine voice expressing his weltschmerz over subtle, ukulele-based harmonies that Neil Young would be proud of.

Chandler hasn't released any albums yet, and he is still unsigned, but Galapaghost's second EP Neptunes, which features Human Unkind, is available now via iTunes or Amazon.

Just another remix competition.

23 May 2010 — NFOP

After last year's critically acclaimed album Still Night, Still Light, Brooklyn's synth pop girl trio Au Revoir Simone are going to put out another remix album, Night Light, to be released on July 5 via Moshi Moshi.

With the likes of Neon Indian, Dam Mantle, but also Your Twenties and Jens Lekman, we're gonna encounter the inevitable as well as rather surprising artists to musically reinterpret the ladies' lush songs.

Among the pleasant surprises is a rework of Only You Can Make You Happy by amazing Dirty Projectors' singer Angel Deradoorian, and on the other end of the spectrum we find (as the album's bonus track) a pretty foreseeable contribution by Belgian neo-Italo Disco duo Aeroplane, who have worked together with Au Revoir Simone before for their remix of Friendly Fires' Paris, arguably one of the best dance tracks of the last couple of years.

Sunday morning comedown.

Starting next month, our latest Canadian dream pop darlings Memoryhouse will come to Europe for a few shows, mostly in the UK.

In their luggage, the two are gonna have a photo book made by Denise/We Are Bandits, and judging from the pictures that are posted on their myspace, that book could very well be amazingly beautiful. And along with the book will come an instrumental/drone LP supposedly composed and produced by Evan. You can listen to one of the beautifully melancholic and dreamy pieces here (stream only), probably named Minor White. Perfect company for your lonely Sunday morning coffee in bed.

The book/LP is limited to 100 units, so good luck to you.
