Underwater pop

26 Sep 2010 — Tonje Thilesen

Singer-songwriter Anana aka Anniken from Norway describes her own music as "dypvannspop"; underwater pop, which I think is a pretty accurate description of her deep, echo-like music. In many ways she reminds me of our very own Susanne Sundfør, whom also have managed to take the pop genre up to a whole new level. Anana, however, brings her music down below the ocean level, under the crashing waves; only lighten up by the thick sun beams that are breaking through the surface. The sound is different down here.

Say My Name.

26 Sep 2010 — Henning Lahmann

How To Dress Well's breathtaking debut Love Remains (Lefse), for sure one of this year's most magnificent albums, has apart from the stunning beauty it represents in itself sparked some considerable buzz about R&B;'s resurrection and redefinition with the means of contemporary lo-fi/bedroom recording techniques that were brought to fame by last year's surf rock and chillwave/hypnagogic pop hype. And though it might be a little too early to proclaim a new trend, artists like South Carolina's Top Girls or Sydney's Guerre who we've both already covered repeatedly on these pages indeed take the same line of fragile, falsetto-laden soul vocals over twisted synth patterns and reduced beats that often appear to be no more than faint echoes. After a short hiatus, today Guerre's Lavurn Lee has come up with the brand new tune Say My Name which heads even more towards the minimalist approach, hardly any instrumentation diverting from Lee's ethereal multi tracked vocalization, thus pretty much hitting the core of rhythm and blues. Amazing.

The Crown Center.

Take a listen to some pretty fresh vibes from the ever-thrilling Not Not Fun catalog, California psych gods Topaz Rags' first new offering since last year's Capricorn Born Again LP. Just as expected, The Crown Center is another terrific jam from the dark and sticky places of the tropics. The 7 inch is available for order now.

Noise pop from Oslo

25 Sep 2010 — Tonje Thilesen

With a sound inspired by My Bloody Valentine and Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Dråpe from Oslo has found its way into the hearts of the Urørt staff, whom chose their amazing track We Want The World (below) in the "recommended tracks" section on the front page. Spending a lot of time on this underground Norwegian music website myself, Dråpe did not pass my ears without a proper listen. Put shoegaze, noise pop and post-rock in a blender, and you've pretty much described Dråpe's sound.

Am I really happening?

25 Sep 2010 — Henning Lahmann

This amazing song somehow got buried in my inbox a while back, but now that fall finally appears to have arrived for good, the pure magic of Somelsewhere's Of What Is to Come keeps popping up in my head, remaining stuck there for hours - Ross Campbell's music is all the world's sorrows broken down into seven intimate minutes of cautious and reduced vocals and sparse instrumentation. Autumn leaves.

Dakotafish

24 Sep 2010 — Tonje Thilesen

Today, words can't seem to flow very easily for some reason — all though I have about a thousand things to say about this splendid synthpop/alternative project Dakotafish from the rural California. In fact, I wonder why Jitter isn't already a radio hit.

Premiere: Coma Cinema - Gentlewoman

24 Sep 2010 — Henning Lahmann

He has already given us an album of such flawless beauty that it's definitely gonna end up high in the lists of a lot of bloggers by the end of the year. Two songs from his debut have inspired the amazing director Tyler T Williams to come up with two of the finest videos of 2010.

And soon, our favorite Greenville, South Carolina resident, the restless and highly prolific Mat Cothran aka Coma Cinema is gonna put out his next full-length named Blue Suicide, to be released on vinyl through Fork and Spoon, on cassette via Wonder Beard Tapes and digitally on his own label Summer Time in Hell (date tba).

After a few beautiful tunes off Blue Suicide that are already floating through the interwebs, we're very honored and a little proud to exclusively premiere a new gem today: Gentlewoman is another intimate song of utmost beauty blending infinite melancholy with the most sensitive talent for melodies of purest pop splendor I've come across in a long long time. Smoothly connecting to the listener's inner sentiments, Mat achieves almost effortlessly to create an atmosphere revolving around his thoughtfulness that for sure won't leave anyone untouched. You will understand.
