Introducing: I Blame Coco

02 Mar 2010 — NFOP

2010 could well become the year of I Blame Coco.

Her real name is Eliot Pauline Styler Sumner, which gives us a hint to her rather famous father, an English gentleman and former policeman who once took a walk in the Big Apple and wrote a song about it. Moreover, she is said to be the current or former "lady friend" of tabloid darling Pete aka Peter Doherty. Just in case anyone's interested in that.
Coco has just released her first single, Caesar, featuring Robyn, on Island Records - both not the worst decisions if you're planning on your breakthrough.

Shiny, polished pop with a certain amount of fake anarchy. Lady Gaga, anyone?

The song below is a bit older and actually has not much in common with the single, and I guess it's not very likely that it will appear on the album, at least not in this version. It's closer to traditional songwriting, and rumour has it that the great Pete, see above, has actually written it. In any case, so the saying goes, it is his favourite song of hers. Oh well, please erase the pictures in my head.

Introducing: Trouble Books

01 Mar 2010 — NFOP

A day in the garden. The sun is up, the snow has melted. Somewhere in the distance, birds are singing, and we smell flowers again. Hello March, welcome spring. It's been a long and cold winter this time.

Akron, Ohio's Trouble Books make just the right music for the upcoming time of year. Dreamy, blissful, with lots of analogue synths and faded vocals, it could be filed next to the other rising acts of the dubious yet wonderful glo-fi/chillwave/hypnagogic pop strand. Still, the songs are not so much worshiping days on the beach in September - rather, it sounds like appreciating a young blossom while wandering through the fields.

The new album, Gathering Tones, will be out on Own Records on 3 March.

Download or listen to the first single below:

You can listen to the songs either on 8tracks.com, or directly on this page with the player embedded on top of the blog posts, which I'd recommend.

These guys won’t hurt you.

Make sure you won't miss HURTS, England's latest synth-pop sensation. They are gonna play at the Magnet Club tomorrow night, thus participating in our much-beloved Intro Intim concert series.

With just the right amount of fashion sensibility, the two Mancunians have made it onto the top four position of the BBC's Sound of 2010 list, right behind Ellie Goulding, Marina & The Diamonds, and Delphic, and one ahead of the Drums - so we should expect something here. Their sound is dark yet blissful, distinctly Manchester, very eighties but still state-of-the-art. Summing up, it's just the sound we're gonna hear a lot this year, and rightly so. After their massive first hit from last year, the stunning "Wonderful Life", listen to the equally fantastic successor down below:

Introducing: The Art Museums

23 Feb 2010 — NFOP

It is about time to introduce the wonderful Art Museums. Hailing from the Bay Area, they've found a home at the ever-creative lo-fi hipsters of the Woodsist label. The two musicians are heavily surfing the zeitgeist, but are nonetheless able to add some very distinct and unique features to the current musical landscape.

Their debut album "Rough Frame" (WOODSIST037) has just been released, and despite almost no press coverage up until now, it is seriously worth all attention.

Ladies and Gentlemen -

a warm hello from Berlin. This is gonna be a blog about, well, music: new music that I think is worth listening to. I will focus on more or less new bands, but not exclusively.

As you will have noticed, this is not the first music blog on this planet. And it is quite unlikely that it will be the most original. So, here are a few of my most obvious influences - this is supposed to be a recommendation, too, in case you're interested in new music:

Transparent
Gorilla vs. Bear
Pinglewood

What else is there to say? I hope you'll enjoy.
