Let’s be honest: when it comes to all things "new age," you’re probably either a believer, or you're not. And no matter what we say about the latest tape by Antwerp’s Lieven Martens, aka Dolphins Into the Future, it’s not gonna change your mind. A Star Maker, Strange Dreams, and Clairvoyance is the loop artist’s second release under his principal guise this year, following last month’s Canto Arquipélago on Underwater Peoples. That LP was dedicated to the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores, allegedly home to Martens’ “Cetacean Nation Studios,” where he creates most of his work.
A Star Maker takes up the concept of Canto Arquipélago, opening with the sort of seagull and lapping water sounds that defined the LP. Overall, however, it rides less on nature-worshipping ambience than its predecessor, and is more sparsely instrumented. The 18 minutes of side A, up for streaming below, are loosely divided into three individual tracks: “The moon shone mildly over the hills, prompting strange dreams in all creatures (a symbolic lucid poem, echoed by the night bird arriving from the faraway coast of chorals)," "Olaf Stapledon’s Star Maker (here’s to you, dear Olaf!)," and a reprise of “The moon….”
The title of the first track basically says it all: after the oceanic sounds have decayed, we hear the slightly muffled and distant voice of a male singer. He interprets said poem for about six minutes, subtly supported by chimes and the occasional cries of tropical birds. The second track, loosely textured and composed mainly of shimmering, chirping noises, is of course a tribute to the principal work of British science fiction author Olaf Stapledon, whose 1937 Star Maker novel revolving around the “progressive unity within and between different civilizations.” This theme that may very well reflect Martens’ fictional existence as the spiritual ambassador of a future, truly liberated life in the oceans, which brings us back to what I said at the outset.

NFOP warmly recommends Kopflos Fest, a wonderful little, truly d.i.y. festival organized by our friends at Mme Claude and staged at their riverside sister venue Marie Antoinette from next Thursday, May 17, till Saturday, May 19. The three-day glory will showcase six acts, two for each night, among them absolute NFOP darlings Keep Shelly In Athens, but also other favorites such as High Places and Lucky Dragons, plus Hayvanlar Alemi, Basketball, and Aniaetleprogrammeur.

This is my first ever track using this alias. Basically - people listen to the music more openly when they don't know anything about the person, when it's "Untitled".
So I've decided I'm going to go forward this way.
Just like Mr Sutton, we don't know who's sent us this mail that included a link to the Youtube audio stream that you find below. What we do know however is that we're thoroughly intrigued and fascinated by the dark, slow-burning track "#001 ", with its straight and unobtrusive base, the well-aimed vocal samples and the remote sounds that add up to something faintly resembling a melody. So whoever you are, please feel free to send more. We'll listen.

I have to give a little shout-out to those fine folks over at The Sound Is Not Asleep PR for digging up all these splendid electronic gems for us, most recently the new NFOP favourite Russell Harmon — and this time we were promised Mount Kimbie, Sepalcure and Flying Lotus to be amongst the influences of their brand new found. I guess they might as well be right: the Leeds-based producer Jermaine Soul is a name you all should tap down in your digital notebooks, as we're undoubtably sure we won't be the first to obsess over these crunchy beats.

M=minimal, the Berlin based label and home of the most excellent German drone and experimental sounds, is set to release a three-way collab between Brandlmayr, Dafeldecker and Fennesz on May 21st. We have the first listen to a mind-altering excerpt of "Till the old world's blown up and a new one is created part 2" that was handchosen by Dafeldecker himself. Exploring the relationship between sound and silence, this terse work dips into fragments of motifs that ring through a stifling lack of noise, only to fade away upon moving through the stillness. Huge stretches of silence engulf the listener until an affecting arrangement of tone clusters washes over the piece, quietly dissolving into chilling nothingness.
Till the old world's blown up and a new one is created will be available on 12" for worldwide orders on KOMPAKT soon.
