Horsebladder: “Fountains”.

25 Oct 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Northampton, Massachusetts' Elaine Kahn sent over a very charming mail to tell me about her "group" named Horsebladder, "consisting of myself, my keyboard, and sometimes a drum". What at first faintly appeared like just another nice yet dilettante bedroom project instantly took my breath away after hearing the very first few bars of "Pioneer", the gloomy, menacing opener of Kahn's forthcoming 12 inch Not I'll Not. Three tracks into the EP, the unsettling intimacy of "Fountains" ultimately spellbound me, with its slow-burning rhythm and tenuous synth progression, calmly meandering over the course of nearly six minutes. The sound of Elaine Kahn's work - who's already released a cassette, called Nicole, last year on Night-People - is mostly eerie and dark, as is the general atmosphere, yet in a less palpable way compared to, say, (early) Zola Jesus or Chelsea Wolfe, to take rather obvious examples of contemporary female artists that slightly follow the same path as Kahn. The means to achieve the enchanting, deeply absorbing mood are stunningly simple and distinctly lo-fi, sparse patterns of analog synth, a restrained drum part and layered vocalization, all blurred and hidden behind a constant hiss of distortion and clipping, all of which adds up to a wonderfully unique, occasionally disturbing trip to the unacknowledged melancholy of your soul. Not I'll Not will soon be is out on Ecstatic Peace. Update: The LP is indeed already out and can be ordered, inter alia, via Insound. Video: Rimar - “Higher Ground”.

25 Oct 2011 — Henning Lahmann
When we first featured Columbus native Rimar on our humble pages, I wondered why this amazingly talented dude doesn't seem to receive the amount of love he deserves, blog- and more generally music biz-wise. Well, to my delight it turns out that this has changed since, as Bella Union has wisely decided to put Rimar's stellar debut EP Higher Ground, up to now only available digitally, on shiny black vinyl, due November 7. To celebrate the occasion, the artist has just dropped an appropriately laid-back and stylish video for the EP's title track, directed by Dylan Knight. Erkin White: “The Shining”.

25 Oct 2011 — Tonje Thilesen
These dark, atmospheric sounds from Russia's Erkin White passed my radar the other day by a complete coincidence, and I instantly caught interest in his rather diverse, but interesting Soundcloud collection. Consisting of both of the dark, electronic ambient with samples from films such as Trainspotting to the more fragile and mysterious soundscaping, Erkin White is still in the process of exploring different spaces of sound, curiously peeking into small cracks hidden in the dry, deserted earth. Oh, and wear a pair of good headphones obviously. Erkin White - The Shining Erkin White - Intro 1-2-3

First Listen: Chrome Wings - “New Lands”.

24 Oct 2011 — Henning Lahmann
We've been waiting for this. Next Monday, everyone's favorite label madness AMDISCS drops New Lands on 12 inch, Chrome Wings' anticipated sophomore effort after last year's remarkable Time Patterns cassette on Stunned Records. The new album is quite a big creative leap forward for the Portland duo, as they've further refined their knack for beautifully textured, swirling and expansive synth pads that leave you happy and stoned even if your default dope vendor had to call in sick. Tracks like "Sky Mirage" or "Stay High" set off towards prior unknown, almost h-poppy sonic realms, reinvigorating our original love for repetitive, restrained patterns of purest infinite bliss that indeed are preferably enjoyed while being stuck in that dreamlike state just before waking up. See for yourself and take an exclusive listen to some of the tracks below. New Lands is out October 31 on AMDISCS. Showcase Focus: Moon Wheel.

24 Oct 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Before hitting Madame Claude's fabled underground stage tomorrow night to kick of our first-ever official NFOP showcase, supporting our idol Dylan Ettinger, here's another delicious foretaste of Olle Holmberg aka Moon Wheel's forthcoming full-length, plus a video for his no less splendid tune "Proud Mary". The crystal-clear, eerie synth progressions of "Valhalla" reinforce our growing sense that this project is one of this year's most exciting musical discoveries. See you tomorrow. Buffalo Moon: “Moses Baby”.

24 Oct 2011 — Henning Lahmann
The week starts with another blissful foretaste of the brand new Buffalo Moon LP Selva Surreal, which is out tomorrow. "Moses Baby" abandons the obvious bossa nova borrowings of the wonderful "Chica de Luna" while lingering firmly on Latin soil - complete with cowbells and congas, and even a wonderful, incredibly sexy sax solo by Michael Lewis. A slow-burning, truly marvelous psych pop jam. Selva Surreal can be ordered now over at Moon Glyph.
