Horrid Red: “Silent Party”.

19 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Edmund Xavier's dark minimal wave project Horrid Red has finished a new EP, to be released in June via Soft Abuse. Recorded in March in San Francisco and Berlin, Silent Party comes either as a three-track 7 inch or on a six-track cassette and once again features the group's signature style of combining gloomy creepiness with an overall very danceable rhythm pattern, adding up to strangely irresistible party tunes. Cop the title track below, and pre-order the thing over here. Tommy Toussaint: “Only Want You”.

18 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
The Cats Purring collective's website just dropped this cracking new "cosmic pop" jam by Georgia, Mississippi's Tommy Toussaint, a wonderfully cheesy and lovelorn synth ballad that has our favorite 80s-dripping romance maestro blissfully yet slightly desperately crooning about the only girl he wants, be it wrong or right, and ain't that the only universal topic we all instantly can connect with? First Listen: StaG - “Rifle Meeker”.

18 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Comprising wide arching harmonies that owe a lot to Fleet Foxes or Panda Bear, airy arrangements leaving a lot of space for the songs' breathtaking melodies to unfold, and an irresistible feeling for compositional suspense, StaG's full-length Rifle Meeker is among the biggest and most pleasant surprises we've come across in 2011 so far. Without stirring up any dust, the Boulder, Colorado via LA duo consisting of Matt McGuire and Will Walden has delivered a debut which is flawless to a degree that's almost scary. Apparently the result of a year of confusion and forlornness after the relocation to the landlocked state - Rifle Meeker is about living in a city I didn’t think was right for me. It’s about missing California and feeling like I was stuck along the seventeen-hour drive between Boulder and Calabasas, CA, constantly seeing road signs for places like Rifle, CO and Meeker, CO - the album feels like a very personal, almost intimate piece of art, at times exposing an intensity of emotion that we've last encountered listening to Hospice, even though the respective contexts might be essentially different. A marvelous, completely unanticipated record. Get Rifle Meeker now for pay-what-you-want over at bandcamp. StaG - Morsels (For a Task) StaG - Tired Photograph "untitled" by Florian Reischauer. buy this print! 15x15cm | 30x30cm Starting today, NFOP photo artist Florian has a little exhibition showing some of his marvelous Pieces of Berlin prints at fenster61, Torstraße 61, Mitte, running until June 14. Ghibli: “Honest Effects”.

18 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Edmonton, Alberta's Thomas Michael, the artist formerly known as Jaded Hipster Choir who is now operating under the recording moniker Ghibli, right now is one of the few artists known to me in experimental music who actually still bother to explore new realms of sound and to transcend boundaries of genre and style while always staying on the firm grounds of purest and finest pop, which has always been and will always be the exact open-mindedness this blog was set up to discover. Thus it's a special pleasure for me to spread the news that Ghibli's debut full-length Pythia, "a modern ode to the Oracle of Delphi", is almost finished and will be dropped June 28. Stealing Sheep: “I Am the Rain”.

17 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
So, according to our sources this might actually become the next big thing and it's easy to see why: First, these three lovely girls are hailing from Liverpool, and as we all know England is the natural epicenter of hypes. Second, these three lovely girls are really really lovely. And third, Stealing Sheep's (oh that name!) folk nicely sits somewhere between Mountain Man and some rather Brooklyn-ish weirdo pop (think Chairlift, or Au Revoir Simone with that wonderful e-piano in the beginning of Your Saddest Song), with the girls' pretty stunning three-part harmonies working as the breathtaking focal point of each song. The overall tone is catchy, pure sugary indie pop on the surface that still barely manages to cover all those dark and twisted edges that are never too far away. Basically, this music is so well-crafted that in our eyes, at least Stealing Sheep would deserve to become the next big thing (See? We said it). The trio's latest 7 inch I Am the Rain was released yesterday on London's new boutique imprint Idle Fret. Get it now via Rough Trade.
