Lovecult.

10 Oct 2010 — Tonje Thilesen

Bringing you some more hot music from the Norwegian music scene, Bergen-based Lovecult mixes new genres with old: shoegaze and post-punk plus psychedelic and krautrock from the 70-s. All though they've been around for two years, the six-piece hasn't released any new material since their EP Liebling back in '08. However, a debut album is in the making (according to the band itself), hopefully to be released sometime next year. For now, the four-track EP is available for free download over at their Urørt site.

No Wave.

09 Oct 2010 — Henning Lahmann

Without much ado, a nice and easy electro synth and sample heavy stomper to get your Saturday night started. No Wave is the work of Pensacola, Florida resident Jonathan Gehrdes. The aptly titled Night Owl leans towards some of this year's rather psychedelia-infused dance music. There's more stuff available for free on his bandcamp. An album named 1991 is scheduled for later this month.

Westinghousing.

09 Oct 2010 — Henning Lahmann

Albuquerque, New Mexico dude Ryan Gabel's one man lo-fi psych pop project Arc Light had been on my radar since my pals over at Ashtapes had introduced his music in late August, but he only very recently regained my full awareness when the impeccable Rose Quartz folks told us about Arc Light's new album Westinghousing which was put up to his bandcamp roughly two weeks ago. Moreover, it turns out that Gabel has relocated to Brooklyn since the first time I've encountered him, and on the western shores of Long Island he has written and produced most of the songs for his sophomore output. Needless to say, those new tunes absolutely live up to the promises Gabel made with his self-titled debut effort. Arc Light might be bedroom music in the true sense of the term, considered that every single sound was recorded by Gabel himself via Garageband, but this doesn't prevent the tunes to be very well crafted and a highly enjoyable listen. Soon, we're gonna hear even more new stuff by Gabel in the shape of his other project Rage City, which is him doing the vocals over Tony Bonanza's instrumentation, another splendid lo-fi dude who we had on these pages back at a time when everybody was still talking about the World Cup.

Enough said, listen to two of Westinghousing's tracks below, and make sure you download the whole album over at bandcamp for a very reasonable amount of money. Also, don't miss Arc Light's first ever video, made for the song Flashes Of Hell (7 Suns) from his debut album.

Genre: suge

09 Oct 2010 — Tonje Thilesen

Yesterday we were finally blessed with the brand new EP by the collaborations project Seeing Suge, a project put together with some of our favorite people around; California-based Mikey from Blackbird Blackbird, Star Slinger aka Darren from Manchester and the 19 year old rapper Emay from Canada.

Even though the big distance, this still hasn't stopped them from making the beautiful track Breaking together, featuring the very best gems of their own music blended together into one, sparkly track. In addition to the single, they've also put out some of their own work on the EP — tracks that will be featured on their upcoming albums: Little Respect (Blackbird Blackbird), 1987 (Star Slinger) and Sleep (Emay).

Bonne anniversaire Beko DSL!

09 Oct 2010 — Henning Lahmann

Could there be anything worse than forgetting the birthday of a dear and admired friend? Of course not. Things get even more unforgivable if it's your friend's first. So I'm devastated that it took me all week till Friday night to finally notice that our very adorable French Beko Digital Singles Label has rather silently celebrated twelve months, fifty-two weeks or no less than three hundred sixty-five days of existence this very Monday. Congratulations for one year of restlessly rummaging through the endless universe of exciting undiscovered music, thereby maintaining a level of quality we can only dream of.

And the best part of it: Instead just relaxing and waiting to receive bunches of well deserved presents, the folks instead made us a present with Beko's first-ever digital LP, the preposterously yet beautifully titled The Salmon of Doubt by the wonderful Connecticut noise pop duo Procedure Club. One track particularly grabbed my attention, the dreamy collaboration with Massachusetts' Sore Eros, available below. But make sure you download the whole marvelous record over at Beko DSL!

Wish You Were Here.

09 Oct 2010 — Henning Lahmann

Before Andrew Caddick aka our absolute favorite Jeans Wilder is gonna turn this musically extraordinary year into an outstanding one with the release of his LP Nice Trash via our French darlings over at La Station Radar and Atelier Ciseaux in November (I really don't intend to put up the pressure here, but seriously, check this and this in case you haven't - and look at the terrific back cover art below), he's about to make the wait a little easier by putting out the digital-only EP Wish You Were Here very soon via his bandcamp. The seven track piece will include all three songs from his Don't Fly So Close to the Sun C18 tape which Andrew had released in June on Trivial Pursuit, plus four previously unreleased tunes that were intended to become part of another split cassette with Deep Sht which will never come into being for reasons that are unknown to the author of these lines (he probably could have asked though).

In any case, below you can already listen to one of those long buried gold nuggets, along with the title track of said Trivial Pursuit release. While Don't Fly So Close to the Sun might be considered Andrew's most ambient side to date, a gently meandering and deeply contemplating synth instrumental, The Shakes on the other hand is a "classic" Jeans Wilder lo-fi jam, a loose drum machine pattern carrying a heavily clipping guitar and Andrew's melancholically toned, equally distorted and echo-laden vocals, in essence exactly the style we've learned to adore this guy for in the first place.

US English

07 Oct 2010 — Tonje Thilesen

Catchy and intelligent, the St. Louis based pop duo US English are one of my my personal favorites among the catch of this month, with their debut EP What Frontier (due October 12 via the quite so lovely Post Literate) just waiting to take its audience with storm. The EP is the first release out of in total three EP's, finally forming the debut album Modular later this year.

Even with such a unique and peculiar sound, there is still something familiar about US English that I can't specifically point out - that not being said in a negative way, however. By mixing pop, electronica and elements of lo-fi together with glitchy, opera-like vocals, the husband-wife duo makes this unique mix into an own, recognizable "trademark" for their music; indeed being very successful.

Order their EP here.
