Premiere: Apostles - “Centre Fade”.

02 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Hereford native Tom Sandwell, who's making pretty amazing post-whatever art rock under his solo moniker Apostles, had already psyched us back in March with the aural wonderlands named Glacial and Wasting Away, and now the dude returns with a double a-side digital single, dropped today via his newly installed bandcamp. Both tunes are considerably more upbeat than their predecessors and owe quite a lot to early 90s fuzz pop which is, as readers know, always enough to leave us happy. Listen to Centre Fade below, and then cop the slightly fiercer track Disconnect over here. Other Colors: “Make Your Move”.

02 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Completely fallen for this lonesome, melancholy-dripping "spectralist pop" gem by Baltimore, Maryland duo Other Colors, a slow-burning tune with devastating harmonies drenched in a low-profile, restrained fog of noise and reverb. Make Your Move appears on Other Colors' self-titled full-length which is out now via Genpop Records. You can order/stream the whole thing here. Radiator Girls/Blackhawks: “Black Girls”.

02 May 2011 — Henning Lahmann
MJ MJ Records (Two Michael Jordans, no less) dropped their fourth-ever release last week, a split cassette between Radiator Girls aka Minneapolis, Minnesota-based Nicholas J.R. Henderson (no girl, no plural) with some lush and easy rock'n'roll, and our dearest Philadelphia outfit Blackhawks, the group that's featuring long-time NFOP favs Daniel Svizeny aka Cough Cool/Nude Beach and Yohsuke Araki aka BAnanas Symphony. Cop two tracks below, head over to the label's bandcamp to stream the whole thing and then grab one of the beautifully crafted tapes over here. Limited to 100. Thought Tempo: “Soft Day”.

29 Apr 2011 — Henning Lahmann
This one kinda caught me off guard. Irvine, California's Sean Raji aka Thought Tempo's curiously off-kilter ambient jam Soft Day needs more than a minute to get started, but then the heavily filtered, slightly early Boards Of Canada-reminiscent synth arpeggios and the loose, supposedly deliberately askew vocal layers over the smooth and trippy beat evolve into a pretty irresistible aural experience. The whole thing gets really extraordinary in combination with the stellar video by Zoom Lens. The small, Anaheim-based imprint Zoom Lens is also responsible for putting out the Soft Day single, which can be downloaded for free over here. First Listen: Cave Chorus Records.

29 Apr 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Today the United Kingdom has been blessed with a very exciting occasion (no, not that one) - the birth of a beautiful new label, no less. Nottingham resident Oli Shilling has started Cave Chorus Records, an imprint and collective devoted to digital releases of different genres, though most of its current roster seems to be heading into an electronic direction. Below, listen to the splendid welcome mix compiled by Bury St Edmunds electronic trio The Soft as well as their wonderfully wavey ballad Mind Fuck, and a track off Shilling's own project Comodo's latest EP To The Sun. Cankun: “Your Fingers the Snakes”.

29 Apr 2011 — Henning Lahmann
French imprint Hands In The Dark Records is about to drop the mind-blowing new full-length by Cankun, the still fairly new project by Archers by the Sea's Vincent Caylet. The eleven-track Ethiopian Dreams might be the most delightful and coherent work of psychedelic/lo-fi/h-pop to surface this year so far, all in all it's a surprisingly sundrenched, slacker-friendly aural pleasure all the way, with Caylet's splendid technique of layering his lush guitar phrases and synth patterns over reduced and mellow beats. Ethiopian Dreams comes on CD with two different cover artworks, the one shown above by the esteemed collage wizard Jheri Evans, the other one by Valerian Marguery. 50 copies each, pre-order yours now over here. Top Girls: “Rayanne (HORS Remix)”.

29 Apr 2011 — Henning Lahmann
It's been quite a while since we last heard from South Carolina pal Evan Adams aka Top Girls, but yesterday he kindly dropped me a few lines to announce that he's finally about to get back into the loop. There's gonna be an EP named R.I.S.E. via Hi-Scores soon, but to start things grab this dark and dub-infused remix of Top Girls "classic" Rayanne, executed by Danish producer HORS. The Arcade Junkies: “Dinosaur Brain”.

29 Apr 2011 — Henning Lahmann
The stellar folks over at Beer On The Rug just notified us that the ever-exploring Ohio native Byron Ferrari whose deservedly buzzed-about Casino Gardens project we introduced recently has returned with a brand new sonic endeavor, the even more hypnagogic (sorry) Arcade Junkies. Dinosaur Brain is a one-track 30+ minute CDR that shows Ferrari at his most psychedelic and playful, a deeply mesmerizing mind trip that will take you away to the outer realms of your consciousness, with or without drugs (though the latter alternative might be helpful). Release date is May 5, pre-order Dinosaur Brain right now over here.
