Hooker Vision is a tiny imprint that specializes in small runs of cassettes and CD-Rs, run by Grant Evans of Quiet Evenings and blessing the world since 2008. The wonderful, literally d.i.y. label is about to drop the January 2011 batch, its biggest one yet in terms of release number and edition size.
The batch includes five releases, four cassette tapes and one double 3 inch CD-R, by the likes of Afterlife, Thoughts on Air, The North Sea, Dry Valleys, Hostage Pageant, Mannequin Hollowcaust, and Mark Bradley, showcasing some seriously quintessential underground experimentalism from start to finish. The Afterlife/Thoughts on Air split is purest breathtaking ambient music, with Brooklyn's Afterlife choosing dual synth, while Hamilton's Thoughts on Air approaches the other side of our consciousness with some slow-burning guitar picking. The North Sea is Brad Rose of Digitalis from Tulsa, Oklahoma, who offers dark and noisy electronic distortions that'll just suck you in, not intending to release you anytime soon. Fort Wayne, Indiana's Dry Valleys is equally captivating yet somewhat more gentle, slow synth soundscapes that evoke an almost contemplative feel. The latter might eventually not be said about the Hostage Pageant/Mannequin Hollowcaust split, as both projects deliberately intend to simply blow the listener away with rolling clouds of harsh electrostatic noise from another world. Finally, things return to smoothness with Portage, Indiana artist Mark Bradley, who creates pretty patterns of ambient synth work. To say the least, every release is mind-boggling in its own right, but getting them all neatly put together is nothing short of bewildering. Listen to two minute excerpts of each artist below, and then head over to Hooker Vision to make sure you don't miss a single second.
Also, watch out for Hooker Vision's first vinyl release planned for later this year by Grant's own project Quiet Evenings.

Totally stoked by this slick'n'sleazy late night jam by Sacramento's Tony Bonanza (who we introduced sometime last summer), taken from their brand new Baby B. EP, up for download on their bandcamp. Passionate mourning over a slow drum machine pattern, a seriously 80s infected synth bass line and some ambient sounds drenched in reverb might sound like a cheap trick, but we absolutely don't mind as long as the outcome is as captivating as this, instantly throwing you into some half-forgotten soft porn TV drama from '86.

Here's a very lazy afternoon dream of a tune sent over by Vancouver's bedroom mastermind Teen Daze, the a side of the first digital 7 inch to be dropped by Cultus Vibes, a brand new label that Teen Daze's Jon has launched together with some close friends to showcase some of his pals' and his own new music. In his own words:
I've come to find that in the last few years, one of the reasons I've been as inspired and challenged to make the music that I make is because of the strong influence of the people around me. This label is a way for me to help share some of the successes that I've had in the last year with some people that I think deserve a chance to be heard.
The label's releases will be all digital and all free. Nice move, Jon.

Here's an apparently new cut from Christelle Gualdi aka Stellar OM Source, uploaded to her Soundcloud today - Clarity is a thrillingly upbeat synth monster, deeply minimal wave-informed analog sounds that instantly electrify even the most stubborn and ignorant towards sheer synthesizer awesomeness. I promise, this one is simply overwhelming.

Just a little while ago our dearest blogmate Life: Aquatic posted about Yojimbo Billions (aka Zach Vogt) from Phoenix, a mastermind of his genre creating dark, chopped-up electronic spiced up with drony synths, sometimes erasing the border between electronica and dubstep. Unique in sound and rich on varying material, Yojimbo Billions builds up a world we rarely see the true surface of - until now. I can guarantee that this will probably be some the better electronica you'll hear in a while.
Download for free from his bandcamp.

Whirl is a six band outfit from the Californian Bay Area that, not unlike fellow SF dream pop outfit Tamaryn, remains true to the legacy of late 80s shoegaze, making gorgeous music to close your eyes to and get drowned in, sweetest, melancholic melodies played by heavily washed-out guitars, beautiful slow-burners to melt your consciousness, simply made for these dark and grey January Sunday afternoons.
Their song Ghost is especially breathtaking, a perfectly desperate dream wave ballad - when the female lead singer inwardly begs "hold me close/stay with me" through thick layers of echo and reverb, you instantly feel both comfort and pain, and what else could we ever demand from music?
Whirl's debut cassette Distressor is now out on Bridgetown Records in an edition of 100, or just grab it for only ten cents via bandcamp.

After being voted up as one of the five nominees to 'artist of the year' over at the Norwegian underground music site Urørt, Bergen-based duo Machine Birds is just about to break the surface. They've been playing beautiful pop music together since 2008, sometimes a bit in the direction of Susanne Sundfør or Therese Aune, minimal and fragile but at the same time heartbreakingly soulful. I also included their nominated song One Last Try in the Norwegian Inquiries II mixtape which you can download here.
