They fly towards the light.

17 Feb 2011 — Tonje Thilesen
It was the name that caught my interest at first: Fivrel. It flows with such a soft consistency in my mouth, and its sugar-sweet pronunciation (in Norwegian, that is) makes me recall long forgotten childhood memories – and I feel like saying the name out loud again and again and again. The music is just as crispy and pure as the name, too, sometimes suddenly making unexpected twists and turns, to be compared with the works of the electronic genius himself, Kim Hiorthøy. The Oslo-based Jostein Fretland has has been putting out his tunes on Urørt since last fall, recently also releasing his first very first EP as Fivrel (which also dropped in my mailbox the other day), a beautiful piece of ambient-meets-electronic that melts its way into your ears, leaving dreamscape-y footprints wherever the sound draws its way. However, I'm not saying that the Fivrel EP is perfect in every way, cause even a butterfly can get tired of fluttering its wings for a while — but all in all Fivrel provides us with a pure and honest beauty which is rare to be found around here. As for the name: I guess that I too, as every curious child, used to go hunting for butterflies when I was a kid. Not for the colourful and more eyecatching kinds however, but rather the tiny, ashen ones that you can find in old wooden houses, often desperately fluttering with its fragile wings in the afternoon sun behind a wall of glass, whirling up dust from the window ledge – and no, I'm not talking about moths. In nynorsk, these tiny, "nameless" creatures go by the name 'fivreld', thereby the moniker of Jostein Fretland, Fivrel. Then again you can ask yourself why someone would name an electronic/ambient music project after a grey butterfly. Well, to quote Jostein's girlfriend Mariell: 'at least they fly towards the light'. And so they do. Order the EP via his website, or download some free tracks over at his Urørt page. Fivrel - Stig! Mixtape: Musique Bohème.

16 Feb 2011 — Tonje Thilesen

We have mixtape for you. Well, that is, the beautiful Landon Baker (or Lndn Bkr, as she seems to prefer, not to be confused with the girl in the picture above) who runs the blog External Groove has a mixtape for you: Musique Bohème. Unfortunately Landon was too shy to share some of her very own thoughts here on NFOP for you all, but since today is also her birthday, we had to grant her wish. However, this won't be the last thing you'll be hearing from our beloved American.

Happy birthday, Landon, and to the rest of you: enjoy this sweet little mix of everything from the bitter-sweet psych pop to dreamy electronic and dark ambient – featuring some of our very own favorites from 2010, a few of them who've also got some pretty interesting releases in mind, coming up later this year.

Tracklist:

01. Evenings - Friend [Lover]

02. Craig Cruiser - Went To Bed With Bedhead

03. Pears - Rushing

04. Persona La Ave - Backroads

Pines.

16 Feb 2011 — Henning Lahmann
I know. Outside it's close to zero degrees but here at NFOP we're having an insanely hazy, summery day. Well, sorry for that. But anyway, one last time, this is from Richmond's Kenny Hamilton, and though his nom de guerre Spacemonster doesn't really fit the music, this college dropout seriously knows how to come up with lush, melody-dripping tape music, with the necessary hiss and carefully washed-out vocalizing his songs feature just about everything we could ever expect from something dubbed as bedroom pop. But no offense intended, I really am stoked by Hamilton's talent that was awoken last summer after his personal life had gotten overly complicated, so do yourself a favor and buy Spacemonster's Gills EP for a Dollar over at bandcamp. We Don’t Surf.

16 Feb 2011 — Henning Lahmann
We don't know much about Bloomington, Indiana outfit We Don't Surf apart from the fact that, well, they don't surf. The band's bio on their myspace plainly informs us that we're dealing with musicians who don't surf but wish they surfed so they sing about their not surfing, and on Facebook we're blessed with the information that their hometown is "not the beach", which all kinda sounds compelling to us. In fact, the only thing we would like to know is how they've managed to record such a ridiculously beautiful and authentic-sounding 60s Mexican throwback piece like La Cuenta de Fernando Ramos EP, but on the other hand, obviously we weren't curious enough to ask either. So suffice it to add that all their stuff is available on bandcamp. And oh yeah, we really dig this. Wild and Free.

16 Feb 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Thanks to Emmanuel for the heads-up on the little solo endeavor by Ryan Trott of Brooklyn's lovely Family Trees, an eight-song collection of "lo-res hi-fi bedroom dream psych garage folk", but no matter how many redundant genre tags you can put in a row without risking contradictions, fact is this is an utterly beautiful EP, all shimmering and sunny pop gems that draw heavily on 60s Californian surf music, in other words stuff that'll warm your heart at first listen. Never forget to stay wild and free, you wonderful people. Grab the whole Spirit Home EP for free over here. First Listen: Circa (Limited Edition CD Series).

16 Feb 2011 — Henning Lahmann
The Australian label Preservation from Marrickville, New South Wales recently started a special edition CD series named Circa, limited to 300 copies per release and featuring cover art by Sydney's Mark Gowing, each work consisting of "a specially created abstract alphabet of shapes, determined by artist, title and catalogue number for something both fixed and random". Listen to four cuts from the first two, mind-blowing Circa releases by Fabio Orsi and Area C below: Originally hailing from southern Italy but currently based out of Berlin, Fabio Orsi makes some kind of very dark and raw ambience on Stand Up Before Me, Oh My Soul!, a guitar-based record that focuses on non-electronic instruments to create immense walls of sound that get interrupted by crude, crushing drum patterns, bass guitars or subtle horn blows, apparently whatever is available to break open the thick layers of reverberated and distorted noise. Fabio Orsi - Folks! My Soul Stands Up Before You! Fabio Orsi - Papa Show Me Your Blues LPs The record by Providence, Rhode Island's Erik Carlson aka Area C is no less ambient but still something entirely different. Building on amazingly arranged patterns of warm analog synth, guitar and organ sounds, Carlson creates rich soundscapes with most minimal means. Map of Circular Thought is a very contemplative effort, sonic meditations that sometimes almost adopt the shape of sound installations - a slow-burning masterpiece all along. Premiere: Wonder Wheel - Think Too Much.

15 Feb 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Until today mostly known for his incredible solo endeavors, Orange, California's musical genius and production mastermind (Puro Instinct, Tan Dollar, Dash Jacket, etc.) Paul Andrew Rosales aka Wonder Wheel recently teamed up with his pals Raul Esparza and Danny Gonzales to record the first full-length band album under his own recording moniker. The outcome is no less than absolutely compelling, Rosales' fine pop compositions seriously benefit from the lineup, the instruments have more space to unfold which leads to an overall richer, more mature and developed sound. Just like Ariel Pink, with whom Rosales often got compared in the past, and his band recording of Before Today, the cheap term "lo-fi" has lost its justification for the latest Wonder Wheel effort. The wonderful, SoCal psych-pop tune Think Too Much, debuted below, even features a short guitar solo, giving the song a delightful 70s classic rock touch. Wonder Wheel's Total Bundy is out on cassette this spring via California's Burger Records. The band's digital single IMHO + Deep in the Bottle is available for free on bandcamp. Beach Graffiti.

15 Feb 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Speedway Star is San Francisco's Justin McNiff, and apparently so far there's nothing to check out apart from two short tracks on Soundcloud, but one of those caught my attention with its no-fi/no-care ambition that still doesn't let the song slip out of focus, always sticking to the hazy pop melody and the nicely melancholy-drenched vocals. If you're not fed up with this kind of production yet, all in all Beach Graffiti is a very fine little summer pop tune.
