First Listen: ASSS / Meddicine Split 12”.

20 Jun 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Mind-blowing cold wave attacks here by Portland, Oregon-based duo ASSS and London resident Monika Krol aka Meddicine who've joint their dark forces for this awe-inspiring split 12 inch which is gonna drop mid-July via ClanDestine and SixSixSixties Records. Both tracks rely on very reduced and mechanical drum patterns and razor-sharp synth lines, yet while ASSS keep it as cold and restrained as possible, in particular regarding the vocals that are clearly very much true-to-the-letter early 80s kraut-informed, Krol takes things on a slightly more aggressive and jittery level. If these two tracks are an indication of what we may expect from the rest of the split (and I guess that's the case), then this one's gonna be a stupendous excursion into minimal synth music in a quality that we haven't encountered thus far this year. Pre-order the vinyl right here. Sun Glitters: “Beside Me”.

20 Jun 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Just like everyone else, we've been banging quite heavily to the lush and eerie electronica of Luxembourg-based producer Victor Ferreira aka Sun Glitters since he surprised us all with his debut Everything Could Be Fine that he dropped via bandcamp in March. Now, this pretty incredible EP is finally going to see its "proper", i.e. physical release, being put out on CD (LP will follow later) on June 29 via the still new and very adorable Portuguese boutique label LebensStrasse Records. So to give you a little heads-up and to remind you of Ferreira's remarkable talent, here's the terrific EP opener Beside Me downloadable for your afternoon delight. Everything Could Be Fine is up for pre-order over here. Tawny Owl: “My Boot Heel is a Lullaby”.

19 Jun 2011 — Tonje Thilesen
Ever since we posted about our crush on UK based alt-rockers Tawny Owl and the Birds of Prey, more tunes have continued to drop from this incredibly talented songwriter (with the Glenn Danzig-esque voice) Tawny Owl and his band, whom recently also put up these two lovely tracks via their bandcamp site. However recently, Tawny Owl himself has been working on a more experimental and stripped-down sound aside from the Birds of Prey, where the beautiful, cinematic piece My Boot Heel is a Lullaby (below), was recently featured on Bare Feet Recordings' 4th compilation CD Sing Me To Sleep, run by Birds of Pret guitarist Alex Carson. The compilation also features work of BoP's drummer Mat Riviere, as well as Hillwalker, a side project of the bassist Sam J. Hill and BoP singer/guitarist/violinist Lydia Walker. Fetch a copy of the compilation over at bandcamp. Rainy Sunday.

19 Jun 2011 — Henning Lahmann
I don't know. Maybe it's my Sunday mood, or it is the cold rain that's been pouring outside all day. Or probably I simply had too many cheerful beats as of late. I guess it's a bit of all. Anyway, I feel seriously relieved that I've accidentally stumbled across these raw gems by two Florida outfits today, one by my long-time secret obsession Ouija and one by this totally unfamiliar but pretty rad Orlando trio named Fever. Shredding guitars never felt so good. Fuck this world today. (Photo) Fever - Social Horrors Ouija - Rubbers Read more → I don't know. Rimar: “Higher Ground”.

19 Jun 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Not sure why this isn't all over the place already. Columbus, Ohio-based producer Rimar is up for some seriously nostalgia-dripping, classic R&B-informed beatworks here that at times have sleazy intercourse with some lush chillwaves coming along. Really sexy. Cop Rimar's Higher Ground EP for free over here. Vocals on the title track by Joseph Andrew Cross. Tan Dollar: “Untitled”.

18 Jun 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Delighted to see that California pop group Tan Dollar has returned with another EP packed with hazy lo-fi/twee-infused guitar tunes featuring three brand new tracks and a re-recorded version of You're Pure Gold. The title suggests that Cursed might be the evaluation of yet another failed relationship (though we're not sure on that), and it's the first effort that Tan Dollar have done as a four-piece. The folks might drop a few CDs of the EP sometime soon, but till then and in any case you may head over here to download the beauty for free now. Night Manager: “Pizza Pasta”.

18 Jun 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Chances are you've already read the news over at the Zones yesterday, but in case you haven't and because the fine folks hit us up as well, here's the brand new tune by long-standing NFOP darlings and currently most exciting Brooklyn noisy surf enthusiasts Night Manager. Calling this one a stylistic shift would probably be inordinate, yet it's a pleasure to be confronted with some more mellow vibes coming from this usually rather thrashy outfit. Blissful. Pizza Pasta is the a-side of Night Manager's upcoming 7 inch, due July 5 via Fire Talk.
