Video Premiere: Nova Scotian Arms - “Gathering/Composition”.

04 Jan 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Slowly meandering, spaced-out layers of drone and ambient synth pads that at once comfort and subtly unsettle, impressively unfolding arrangements built around encompassing tape loops, gently fading into an invisible, infinite space - with his new record Cult Spectrum, LaGrange, Georgia's Grant Evans' (of Hooker Vision and Quiet Evenings) solo endeavor Nova Scotian Arms has readied a tremendously strong example of contemporary synth experimentalism, a brilliant record of total sonic immersion that marks the first truly essential release of 2012. The superb LP opener "Gathering/Composition" was masterfully visualized by Hobo Cubes' Frank Ouellette aka Moduli TV, perfectly capturing the eerie and contemplative temper of Evans' piece. Watch the video exclusively below. Cult Spectrum is out tomorrow, January 5, on Digitalis. Ensemble Economique: “End Scene”.

04 Jan 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Absolutely digging these new, deeply dramatic and literally end scene vibes on Brian Pyle's latest Ensemble Economique track. Not sure if this is already a foretaste of a new EE release, but after making our year-end list for two years in a row, we surely will just keep on keeping an eye on Pyle's ever-amazing Soundcloud. Teen Runnings: “Why Does Everybody Do?”

04 Jan 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Japanese fuzzy surf-pop outfit Friends had a marvelous yet widely overlooked 10 inch release last year, but as everybody keeps talking about their other Friends, the folks around Shota Kaneko recently decided to change their name into Teen Runnings, which actually might turn out to be a rather wise decision after all. The group has heralded the start of their newish existence by unveiling a few very worthwhile demos - listen to the uplifting and sundrenched beach anthem "Why Does Everybody Do?" below and check some other tunes over here. Ghostandthesong: “Untidy”.

03 Jan 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Enigmatic Ohio sound source Dayvan Zombear has slowly but inexorably been creeping its way into legitimacy with its still fairly new spinoff imprint DZ Tapes, whose third release finally hooked me up. It's Unschärfe / Schimmer, a split tape between New Orleans-based Chris Rehm and most notably Berlin's lo-fi, "neo-surrealistic punk" one-man project Ghostandthesong, who's actually one of the most interesting exponents of the local experimental scene and has been on my watchlist for quite some time now already. Listen to his song "Untidy" below, a droning piece of distorted, gently menacing pop that develops unobtrusively yet beautifully only to collapse in an uncanny swell of noise and mutter. Unschärfe / Shimmer is out on cassette and also available as a free download. Ghostandthesong - Untidy Also check the video for "Dress to Fail": Read more → Enigmatic Ohio sound source Dayvan Zombear has slowly but inexorably been creeping its way into legitimacy with its still fairly new spinoff imprint DZ Tapes, whose third release finally hooked me up. Airbird: “We Used To”.

02 Jan 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Don't have any further information about this one but it's apparently a new tune by Ford & Lopatin's Joel Ford aka Airbird, and the groove has instantly infected my headphones, which is never ever a bad sign. Video Premiere: Cough Cool - “Disney Again”.

02 Jan 2012 — Henning Lahmann
With Lately, Cough Cool's Dan Svizeny only recently delivered a perfect example of post-internet slacker shoegaze, but the dude just won't stop, casually dropping another collection of mellow, fuzzed-out sound collages with his new split with Marseille's own distorted surf exponent Johnny Hawaii. Below, take an exclusive look at the appropriately drugged, psych-leaning visualization of "Disney Again", yet another perfectly unwinding piece of hazy pop melancholia. The split tape will be released tomorrow, January 3, jointly via French quality imprints La Station Radar, Atelier Ciseaux, and Hands In The Dark. Limited edition of 100. Also check the video for Johnny Hawaii's "The Lonely Smurfer": Cough Cool - Disney Again Johnny Hawaii - The Lonely Smurfer Read more → With Lately, Cough Cool's Dan Svizeny only recently delivered a perfect example of post-internet slacker shoegaze, but the dude just won't stop, casually dropping another collection of mellow, fuzzed-out sound collages with his new split with Marseille's own distorted surf exponent Johnny Hawaii. Bathetic Records Presents: “Expressway”.

02 Jan 2012 — Henning Lahmann
"2011 has been a great year for music. And especially, it's been a great year for us at Bathetic." We here at NFOP can only confirm William Cody Watson's assessment, and hence we're more than pumped to see him and his mate Alex Zhang Hungtai aka Dirty Beaches curating Expressway, a new year's compilation for one of our favorite labels, featuring tracks by many of today's finest artists in underground pop including Ela Orleans, Cough Cool, Hobo Cubes, Femminielli, Tonstartsbandht, Wet Hair, and others (and of course the curators themselves). Read about the whole compilation here and download it for free. What a great start into 2012. Dirty Beaches - Highway 1 Speculator - Picking Flowers Read more → "2011 has been a great year for music.
