Video premiere: Slow Magic - “Youths”.

17 Apr 2012 — Tonje Thilesen
Following the video premiere of Feel Good Lost's latest visual quite exactly a week ago, we got another fine piece for you this Tuesday afternoon, featuring our mysterious animal masked friend Slow Magic. You've might already heard some hype around his upcoming 8-track album, ehm, "▲" as of lately, following up from the free mini EP that dropped on bandcamp all the way back in August last year. The full LP of "▲" is out on April 30th via LebensStrasse Records. Update: We've just been notified that there also a few copies left of "▲" on cassette via Words+Dreams, and as this is totally tape material, we recommend you cop one here. Watch the video directed by Brendan Canty and Conal Thomson below. BLKKATHY: “Dem Bones”.

16 Apr 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Got this mail by Queens, New York's Deep Ellum Records a few days ago, and though admittedly I had never heard of the "home of all things Lo Fidelity Allstars, Lord Warddd, Lord & Master and other shite", damn this is highly addicted stuff here. Both "Dem Bones" and "Done Shit", the first two tracks by BLKKATHY, which apparently is the solo project of some Brooklyn resident named Kate Faust, are utterly intriguing, in particular the latter with its impelling house beat and that totally dope vocal line. "Dem Bones" is somewhat slower and probably not so much a call to the dance floor, but instead it's got a supremely stylish and pretty sophisticated video to go along. So whatever this project and the label are precisely and who's behind all this, we just hope there's more of this gorgeous material to follow soon. Go here for some other digital releases from Deep Ellum, all available for free download. Video premiere: Dpony - “Movie”.

16 Apr 2012 — Tonje Thilesen
Last year we were briefly introduced to Dpony, the psychedelic outtake of Hooray For Earth's Noel Heroux and Zambri's Seth Kasper, together with Johnny Woods and Josh Ascalon, whom released the tracks of their video album Movie for free download back in November. Today, the breathtaking visuals are finally available in full stream, after only having been available on VHS limited to 100 editions, directed by Dpony's own Johnny Woods. He says: "My original plan was to shoot a whole bunch of original material, and make a crazy narrative out of it all, and then rip it to shreds with the video synthesizer and other processing techniques. (…) And I really don't like using "found footage". It's not any kind of ethical thing, I would just be horrified if I spent a month on something, and then someone else used the same "found footage" for another video.       Right around that time, my video partner and studio-mate Bec Stupak unearthed a box of VHS tapes she had shot in high school and college. She asked if I could digitize them, and to be honest, I was pretty curious and excited to watch them. Bec was the person who inspired me to start making videos in the first place, so to me, it was sort of a treasure chest. She just gave me one warning: "you will probably see me naked". There were probably 60 tapes total. So, I started digitizing the tapes, and immediately was jaw-dropped. The tape that eventually became "Desert of Calculations" was the first one I popped in, and it was just unreal: in 1992, this sixteen year-old girl is making Richard Kern/Jack Smith/Warhol style underground films in her bedroom in Princeton, NJ. It was just too good. I really like my videos to have a sense of timelessness, or at least weird-time-confusion, to them, and this was perfect. It felt like a lot of underground films from the 60s-80s, was shot in the 90s, and would now be re-processed and edited in 2011 using 70s era technology. I think I was listening to the Dpony rough mixes as I was digitizing, fretting about how to pull off the album-length video, and well, the obvious answer occurred to me." Don't forget to download the album here, or alternatively (for US residents only) snatch a physical copy of the video via their website. Alligator Indian: “Dark Fruit”.

16 Apr 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Originally hailing from Orlando, Florida, male/female duo Alligator Indian aka Christian Church and Spooky Bubble probably needed the relative Appalachian remoteness of Asheville, North Carolina - a city so outstanding on so many levels it requires a special segment on Wikipedia - to truly mature their music's splendid weirdness. "Dark Fruit", the first advance single off the duo's proper debut album Spring I'm In, is a slow-burning, thoroughly surreal and off-kilter affair, with both the musicians' vocals slightly out of tune, intermingled with a blend of layered patterns of cheaply sounding, analog synth, and a simple yet perfectly suited rhythm section, a combination that might come across as confusing and a bit messy at first before slowly yet steadily unfurling its whole peculiar magic. Alligator Indian's debut LP Spring I’m In will be out soon via San Diego's Bleeding Gold Records.
