Barker: “I Feel”.

08 May 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Essentially a long way from the work he's dropped with his Ostgut partner in crime Andreas Baumecker in recent years, Berlin resident and long-standing Berghain night Leisure System co-founder Sam Barker's solo material is less playful techno experimentalism and more edgy and intricate beat bravura, clearly informed by contemporary UK bass explorations. The three tracks on his recent EP Like an Animal however don't stop there, finding their very own language within fluctuating rhythmic patterns, vexing melody disruptions and boldly ethereal synth employment, with a result that solidly stands among the most instantly relatable, fascinating and utterly satisfying electronic music put out in 2012 so far. Listen to the gently meandering EP track "I Feel" below, the most contemplative and unashamedly dreamy of the three. The Like an Animal EP is out now on Leisure System. get it here. Listen to snippets of the whole EP below: Read more → Essentially a long way from the work he's dropped with his Ostgut partner in crime Andreas Baumecker in recent years, Berlin resident and long-standing Berghain night Leisure System co-founder Sam Barker's solo material is less playful techno experimentalism and more edgy and intricate beat bravura, clearly informed by contemporary UK bass explorations. Kareem Abdul Jabbar Jr.: “SME-1-LK-U”.

08 May 2012 — Jesse Thompson
This song is a straight-up cruiser. A vice'd-out jam for sure. Arpeggios and slick cosmic synth lines wash over you like passing neons on mirror-coated sunglasses; and like most things cosmically charged, it holds the galactic disposition of things simultaneously moving extremely fast and slow. I don't know much about this particular Kareem Abdul Jabbar Jr., but I do know he's not the son of the famous Sr. Instead, KAJJ is the music moniker of Providence, RI resident (and RISDI student? [DISCLAIMER]) Elliot Romano, and he's got a stack of underplayed tunes on his Soundcloud page that he's apparently been quietly uploading for the past year. According to Romano, "SME-1-LK-U" is music he's contributing to a film called "Heaven's End". I'm interested to find out more. Stream "SME-1-LK-U" below. Zeon Light Tapes Spring Batch.

08 May 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Beloved Swedish tape imprint Zeon Light just dropped its next batch of delicious left-field sound recordings, five new cassettes made by more or less enigmatic artists from places such as Portugal, the USA, or Småland. This is all good stuff here, however two of the releases caught our attention in particular. First, there's Linear Bells' c46 An Island, seven extensive experimental ambient musings for your Tuesday afternoon contemplation, composed and arranged by Nantes, France native David Teboul, "created after a trip to Chausey Islands where some sounds and field recordings were trapped". Splendid. The second one is somewhat more elusive though seemingly more straightforward. Sea-Through is a decidedly brief submission, four tracks that spread across a tape of fifteen minutes in length. According to the information we could gather, the author of these twisted beach pop gems, Heat and White, is to be found in beautiful Malmö on the southwestern tip of Scania right by the bridge that connects Scandinavia with the Danish isles and thus mainland Europe. I've seen beaches there, and if my memory doesn't fail me, then these hushes of fuzzed guitar evoke images that are just a bit too lush and sunny for the Baltic seashore. But then again, that's how they are, these Swedes. Listen to the title track above. Get all the tapes of the batch here. Haleek Maul & Supreme Cuts: “Gully”.

05 May 2012 — Tonje Thilesen
Haleek Maul, the 15 year old Brooklyn-based rapper was first introduced to us via one of Jamie Harley's impeccable video creations a few months ago, and we dared to compare him to Canada's EmAy, whom also released a powerful debut album only weeks ago. Under the beat caring of the rising Chicago producer Supreme Cuts, this brand new collab track below jumps up and hits you in the face. Literally. Haleek Maul's debut EP Oxyconteen is out via Merok Records on June 14th. Premiere: A Dancing Beggar - “Ghosts”.

05 May 2012 — Tonje Thilesen
I first stumbled upon A Dancing Beggar on an indescribably cold morning back in January, surprised with how such heartbreaking beauty could've been overlooked for so long — but moreover utterly impressed by the subtle melancholy that crawls out of the fingertips of his hidden identity. Having his base somewhere on the south coast of England, the two first Bandcamp-released albums, How The Grow Up and my personal favourite What We Left Behind saw the light back in 2009, records I could easily point out as a must-listen to every other soul with a strong weakness for the emotional or atmospheric ambient such as myself. Perhaps not the most fitting tune with summer being just around the corner (already having arrived here in Berlin), but I always was that kind of person who'd pick shade for sunlight anyway. Soak up in sadness and listen to this incredible new track from his upcoming EP Ghosts out on May 14th, which will also feature remixes of selected songs from Follow The Dark As If It Were Light (2011), including Sun Glitters, threethings, Kontakte and Franz Kirmann.
