Video Premiere: Phantom Horse - “Twilight Sohn”.

13 Jul 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Delightful and surprisingly lush, library-informed minimal electronics in the best of German traditions here by Hamburg-based duo Phantom Horse aka Ulf Schütte (also of Datashock, Black To Comm, Aosuke, and Alien Radio) and Niklas Dommaschk, whose self-titled LP is out now on Dekorder. First single "Twilight Sohn" creates joyfully rhythmic, colorful soundscapes brimming with plucking and bleeping analog and modular synth scales over subtly distorted pads generated with guitar and more synths, with quite mesmerizing results that get further augmented by the absolutely appropriate retro-futuristic visualisations. The whole record is warmly recommended, go here to find out where to get it. Exclusive: Stream the New EP of Barn Owl Member Jon Porras aka DVVLLXNS.

12 Jul 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Seminal San Francisco experimental duo Barn Owl has always been a hub for all kinds of solo ventures of its members Jon Porras and Evan Caminiti. This year alone, Caminiti has already released a staggering work of stripped-down folk-informed drone with Night Dust on Immune Recordings, and is set to drop another full-length on August 21 via Thrill Jockey, named Dreamless Sleep. Last year, his partner in crime Jon Porras' first solo effort under his own name, Undercurrent on Root Strata, took a similar path into slow-burning, deep drone territory. For his latest effort however, Porras has broken out in a different direction with his new project DVVLLXNS, not that obviously named after Dorothy Vallens, Isabella Rossellini's character in Blue Velvet. The four-track EP LITVNY is a dazzling example of contemporary occult electronica founded on unsettling substructures of menacing white noise and haunting samples, creating expansive soundscapes that evoke images of late night cruises through the daunting, abandoned outskirts of the city. A highly compelling EP, and a superb debut for Jon Porras' new musical course. The EP is also supposed to serve as the initial spark for digital movement/blog THX NXW MXNVMXNTS, which will be curated by Porras and fellow Bay Area artists and work as a focal point for happenings on the darker side of electronic music in and around San Francisco. LITVNY is out now and available via bandcamp. Preview: Austin Cesear - “Cruise Forever”.

12 Jul 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Intriguing, pleasantly challenging new sounds from the West Coast here by young, enigmatic producer Austin Cesear who's reportedly hailing from the Bay Area, which is basically the only thing that's known about him/her. Alongside other US-based projects such as Thought Broadcast and Charlatan, Cesear is exploring the intersections between techno and house on the one side and noise and hypnagogic pop on the other, landing somewhere between The Skaters at their most elusive circa mid-noughties and some run-down Berlin techno location at 4.30 am. In itself this is of course nothing new or groundbreaking, as the fundaments of techno are by definition nothing but inherently noise. However, this kind of music smartly evades the overcome minimal/maximal dichotomy of electronic music, and in the wake of producers like Actress, Andy Stott, Kassem Mosse, Demdike Stare, or Hieroglyphic Being (there'd be a few more to be mentioned), this kind of noise/dance coalescence seems to be on the rise. At any rate, this particular undercurrent of contemporary electronic music appeared to be significant enough for The Guardian to include it in their recent list "The A-Z of pop in 2012", rather stupidly dubbing it "voodoo house" (we suppose the letter V was the only one still available), though they'd decided to define it as "the British response to witch house", which is not only arbitrary but indeed unfounded on every level. However, the connection made to hauntology is convincing, not least if you are willing to accept hypnagogic pop as some kind of (let's be careful here) American counterpart. Bring in Glasgow artist TVO's latest work, and we almost have a trend. London-based imprint Public Information, responsible for putting out some of the most exciting experimental electronics of late, is of course particularly susceptible to the delineated conflation of sounds whose groundwork neatly spans a couple of decades, hence it makes a lot of sense that they've included hitherto unknown artist Austin Cesear on their remarkable roster. Moreover, his debut LP Cruise Forever might well be the label's strongest release to date. In a way, the producer takes above concept to its logical conclusion, letting aimlessly meandering noise interludes interfere with a mesmerizing stream of after hour dancefloor trips encompassing anything from dub to house and techno that by themselves invariably carry a constant flow of muffled, unsettling and undefined sonic pulsation. All this results in a highly compelling piece of avant garde electronics which already is one of our favorite releases of 2012. Surely not to be missed. Cruise Forever is out July 30. Video: Aria Rostami - “My Bobby Valentine / Black Ring”.

12 Jul 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Aria Rostami is a San Francisco-based experimentalist composer and pianist, whose unexpected, enticing debut EP Peter dropped a couple of weeks back, showcasing a skilled knack for atmospheric, abstract electronics built around heavily manipulated, eerie vocal samples that at times are evocative of Balam Acab's work. The weightless ballads on Peter were written and recorded in memory of Rostami's best friend Shawn, who used to be his musical partner, in an attempt to explain that relationship. Below, watch the appropriately conceptional and otherworldly video for EP tracks "My Bobby Valentine / Black Ring", made by visual artist Matthew Sevilla aka Render Jones. Stream the EP in full below. You may also download all tracks for free. Vessel: “Court Of Lions”.

12 Jul 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Despite a flood of new music every single day, it of course doesn't happen all that often that you're confronted with truly genre-defying, bold and provocative material. At least since last year's release of the impressive VeElSkSiEdL on Astro Dynamics however, a split between Bristol's El Kid and Vessel, it quickly became obvious that they as well as their whole Young Echo collective might be some of those rare species of honest investigators into uncharted sonic territory. Enter everyone's favorite underground pop imprint Tri Angle, whose impeccable instinct for the unconventional and thrilling let them announce the signing of Sebastian Gainsborough aka Vessel this January. The label will put out his proper debut full-length Order of Noise on September 24. Below, listen to the rhythmically challenging, stupendously varied and far-reaching first track "Court Of Lions" to get a vague idea of what we're trying to say. Gary War: “Muscle Dysmorphia”.

12 Jul 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Listen to another track off Gary War's excellent forthcoming LP on Spectrum Spools, Jared's Lot. Album closer "Muscle Dysmorphia" is another example of War's uncompromising approach to outré pop, frantic and playful and subtly grandiose. Jared's Lot is out July 24. Our dearest Canadian friend Alt Altman has been a frequent read on NFOP this year, both via Digits as well as his side project duo Bad Passion. Having recently moved into our neighbourhood in Berlin, Alt has spent the last couple of months finishing up his new EP (as well as getting heavily addicted to Club Mate), and the result can be streamed for your fine, pop hungry ears below, or downloaded for free via his own website. Make sure to read the description, too. Read more → Our dearest Canadian friend Alt Altman has been a frequent read on NFOP this year, both via Digits as well as his side project duo Bad Passion.
