J Fernandez: “Real Flowers”.

09 Oct 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Already championing this amazingly talented Chicago-based musician back in June after stumbling across his sublime Olympic Village tape that initially arrived as part of Teen River's massive first batch in January, J Fernandez' tune "Real Flowers" might well be this year's most enchanting guitar pop song. It's dreamy, lush, slightly melancholic, yet light-hearted, or in other words, everything we could've ever asked for, and plainly perfect October music. Which is why it's a well-timed decision by London boutique imprint Morning Ritual to re-release Olympic Village together with No Luck, an EP that Teen River had dropped in July in collaboration with fellow Chicago label Pretty All Right. After the stellar recent Holy Strays 7 inch, Morning Ritual once again prove that they're really onto something in terms of NFOP-approved music. No Luck/Olympic Village is out October 29. Video: Harry Forbes - “Tomorrow’s Achievements”.

08 Oct 2012 — Henning Lahmann
As will be well-known to most of our readers, London-based Public Information is one of our favourite new(ish) labels for its ever-growing knack for unearthing the most astonishing electronic investigations both contemporary and from the glorious past of machine-originated music. After reissuing the forgotten pioneering work of Englishman Frederick Charles Judd earlier this year, new release Tomorrow’s Achievements: Parry Music Library 1976-86 is the second time Public Information delves deep into the archives of lost library music. According to the label, Parry Music was founded in Toronto in 1974 by John Parry and Chris Stone, becoming somewhat the equivalent to the Radiophonic Workshop, at least sonically speaking. Classic library stuff, knowingly compiled by the P.I. staff and remastered at Berlin's prestigious vinyl cutting powerhouse D&M. Watch a nicely assembled piece made up of Geoffrey Jones' "This Is Shell" featuring the title track and album closer by little-known musician Harry Forbes, "the real driving force of our Parry-Love; a master of imminent, hummable melody, sublime synth miniatures baked in sweetness", in the words of the P.I. crew. Yes indeed. Tomorrow’s Achievements: Parry Music Library 1976-86 is out October 15. The 12 inch vinyl edition appears to be sold out already, but there should be some downloadable version as well, which we hereby highly recommend. Also stream a brief sampler of the album below: Read more → As will be well-known to most of our readers, London-based Public Information is one of our favourite new(ish) labels for its ever-growing knack for unearthing the most astonishing electronic investigations both contemporary and from the glorious past of machine-originated music. Lee Gamble: “Emu”.

08 Oct 2012 — Henning Lahmann

Berlin-based label PAN continues its string of superb releases with Diversions 1994-1996 by British artist Lee Gamble, a mostly beatless, highly conceptual work of ambient and noise-leaning collages that is nonetheless closely linked to the dancefloor, consisting of sounds that Gamble solely derived from his mid-nineties collection of jungle cassette mixtapes. Both highly personal recollection and an hommage to the final convulsions of rave's heyday, the two uninterrupted transmissions are a very intriguing example of hauntology done right. Listen to the five-minute cut "Emu" below. Diversions 1994-1996 is out October 26.

Sense: “When Will We Breathe Again”.

08 Oct 2012 — Henning
Fresh out of Melbourne, Australia comes Sense, a.k.a. Adam Raisbeck. Anxious and foreboding synth lines are backed by the timbre of soft, repetitive electronic drums to create what Raisbeck describes as "electronic emotional music". His prior experience making techno-inspired music is clearly an influence, and comparisons to artists like The Field and Oneohtrix Point Never are inevitable. This is the project of a seasoned and technically proficient musician and it very clearly shows. Read more → Fresh out of Melbourne, Australia comes Sense, a.k.a. Adam Raisbeck. NFOP + Yvynyl Present: CMJ Hype Machine Handpicked.

05 Oct 2012 — Tonje Thilesen
We're thrilled to present our very first CMJ showcase with Hype Machine, curated by yours truly and our dearest friend Yvynyl, bringing you some of our very favourite names this year to an all-nighter at Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg. Our most exciting act is brought to you all the way from their base in Berlin (all though originally hailing from Oslo); the weird and energetic "Tækno" in aid of the all-hardware duo Bloksberg. Before the two of them will bring your ears into an occult space odyssey, Brooklyn's finest pop experimentalists Hooray For Earth will warm up the dance floor with their monumental, psychedelic synth pop, followed by another exciting NFOP regular and Cascine signees: the absolutely brilliant Jensen Sportag. Just if this wasn't enough, Yvynyl has also picked another two excellent names to complete the roster, our beautiful friends in Hundred Waters and Captured Tracks kid Mac DeMarco. The whole beauty kicks off at 6PM, October 18th on North 6th and Wythe Avenue, and is free of charge (!) — just remember to RSVP right here before it's too late. A special guest will also be confirmed closer to the CMJ kickoff, and as it just happens to be a certain someone's birthday that day (cough), we sincerely hope to see all your pretty faces on the dance floor with us. Here's also a brand new track from Mac DeMarco: Read more → We're thrilled to present our very first CMJ showcase with Hype Machine, curated by yours truly and our dearest friend Yvynyl, bringing you some of our very favourite names this year to an all-nighter at Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg. Tuff Sherm: “Pharmacy EP”.

03 Oct 2012 — Henning Lahmann
London's stellar Trilogy Tapes imprint continues its intriguing explorations into the gritty and low-res territories of electronic music with the Pharmacy EP by Tuff Sherm, a side-project by Sydney-based producer Dro Carey. Definitely house-centered, the three tracks that are streamable below all enter the same murky twilight zone of the dancefloor that Leipzig luminaries Kassem Mosse and Mix Mup embraced earlier this year, if with considerably differing results. The highly recommended effort is out very soon. Premiere: Kool Thing - “Plan.Life.Go”.

03 Oct 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Watch the brand new video for "Plan.Life.Go", the signature single of one of the hottest outfits based out of Berlin at the moment, Kool Thing aka Sydney and Dublin natives Julie Chance and Jon Dark, presented here simultaneously with our Irish friends over at Nialler9. The piece was made by French director Robin Plessy and shot at the notorious Beelitz Heilstätten in Brandenburg, a delightfully spooky abandoned sanatorium just outside Berlin, which provides an appropriate setting to visualise the song's gritty undertones. The Plan.Life.Go 12 inch is still available over here.
