Snow Drone.

19 Feb 2011 — Henning Lahmann
The afternoon wore on, and with the awe, born of the White Silence, the voiceless travelers bent to their work. Nature has many tricks wherewith she convinces man of his finity, -- the ceaseless flow of the tides, the fury of the storm, the shock of the earthquake, the long roll of heaven's artillery, -- but the most tremendous, the most stupefying of all, is the passive phase of the White Silence. All movement ceases, the sky clears, the heavens are as brass; the slightest whisper seems sacrilege, and man becomes timid, affrighted at the sound of his own voice. Sole speck of life journeying across the ghostly wastes of a dead world, he trembles at his audacity, realizes that his is a maggot's life, nothing more. Strange thoughts arise unsummoned, and the mystery of all things strives for utterance. And the fear of death, of God, of the universe, comes over him, -- the hope of the Resurrection and the Life, the yearning for immortality, the vain striving of the imprisoned essence, -- it is then, if ever, man walks alone with God. Rub me the right way.

19 Feb 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Their Only Dreams is the (before mentioned) recording project of LA's David Lyudmirsky, and his very own yet very SoCal take on psych-pop is still exciting us on this side of the Atlantic. Lyudmirsky has just released his new EP Pop Tart, and the new tunes show a leap forward in terms of actual songwriting - he is obviously starting to channel his immense talent into confident craftsmanship. Together with a delightful dash of Californian humor and some City of Angels self-mockery, the twisting and plucking tunes on Pop Tart are among the best in its genre to come out in the last couple of months. Highly recommended. Lyudmirsky's whole stuff, including his awesome first full-length Darling In Dream Dimension, is available for free on his bandcamp. Talk to Me.

19 Feb 2011 — Henning Lahmann
London's Mauro Remiddi aka Porcelain Raft is gonna drop his latest Gone Blind EP this Tuesday, February 22. Below, take a listen to Talk to Me, a slightly darker and more twisted, less twee-infused and melody-dripping yet nonetheless incredibly amazing track, actually leaning toward the solo works of a certain UK musician who...speaking of: The King Of Limbs is excellent, support these promising newcomers and get the album here. Also, make sure you don't miss Mr Remiddi on his upcoming European tour with NFOP favs Yuck: 03-02 Hamburg - Beatlemania 03-03 Copenhagen - Loppen 03-04 Berlin - Comet 03-06 Vienna - B72 03-07 Zurich - Hafenkneipe 03-08 Milan - Rocket 03-10 Amsterdam - Paradiso 03-11 Paris - Point Ephemere (via) Porcelain Raft - Talk to Me Read more →

Wicked Crafts / Braindamage Split 7”.

17 Feb 2011 — Henning Lahmann
The Copenhagen-based imprint Skrot Up hit me up the other day to inform about their delicious roster of psychedelic/noise/garage artists, and this odd pairing particularly grabbed my attention, a split 7 inch by Montréal's Wicked Crafts and Braindamage from Uppsala, Sweden. While the first piece of the double a-side release, Geraldine (Curse of the Wicked Crafts) is a slow-burning, dark garage ballad about drugs and self-destructive girlfriends, Braindamage's tune Hot Pachuco Love draws heavily on classic minimal wave to come up with a sick and twisted synth creeper, as if someone accidentally opened a teenager's gloomy practice room that had been forgotten back in 1983 to find this on a dusty tape. The 7 inch is limited to 200 pieces and is out now. Before ordering, remember to check your passport: If you're hailing from the US or Canada, go here. If you are from anywhere else, go here. It isn't that difficult actually. Wicked Crafts - Geraldine (Curse of the Wicked Crafts) Braindamage - Hot Pachuco Love Read more →

They fly towards the light.

17 Feb 2011 — Tonje Thilesen
It was the name that caught my interest at first: Fivrel. It flows with such a soft consistency in my mouth, and its sugar-sweet pronunciation (in Norwegian, that is) makes me recall long forgotten childhood memories – and I feel like saying the name out loud again and again and again. The music is just as crispy and pure as the name, too, sometimes suddenly making unexpected twists and turns, to be compared with the works of the electronic genius himself, Kim Hiorthøy. The Oslo-based Jostein Fretland has has been putting out his tunes on Urørt since last fall, recently also releasing his first very first EP as Fivrel (which also dropped in my mailbox the other day), a beautiful piece of ambient-meets-electronic that melts its way into your ears, leaving dreamscape-y footprints wherever the sound draws its way. However, I'm not saying that the Fivrel EP is perfect in every way, cause even a butterfly can get tired of fluttering its wings for a while — but all in all Fivrel provides us with a pure and honest beauty which is rare to be found around here. As for the name: I guess that I too, as every curious child, used to go hunting for butterflies when I was a kid. Not for the colourful and more eyecatching kinds however, but rather the tiny, ashen ones that you can find in old wooden houses, often desperately fluttering with its fragile wings in the afternoon sun behind a wall of glass, whirling up dust from the window ledge – and no, I'm not talking about moths. In nynorsk, these tiny, "nameless" creatures go by the name 'fivreld', thereby the moniker of Jostein Fretland, Fivrel. Then again you can ask yourself why someone would name an electronic/ambient music project after a grey butterfly. Well, to quote Jostein's girlfriend Mariell: 'at least they fly towards the light'. And so they do. Order the EP via his website, or download some free tracks over at his Urørt page. Fivrel - Stig! Fivrel - Fyrste Rom Read more →

Mixtape: Musique Bohème.

16 Feb 2011 — Tonje Thilesen

We have mixtape for you. Well, that is, the beautiful Landon Baker (or Lndn Bkr, as she seems to prefer, not to be confused with the girl in the picture above) who runs the blog External Groove has a mixtape for you: Musique Bohème. Unfortunately Landon was too shy to share some of her very own thoughts here on NFOP for you all, but since today is also her birthday, we had to grant her wish. However, this won't be the last thing you'll be hearing from our beloved American.

Happy birthday, Landon, and to the rest of you: enjoy this sweet little mix of everything from the bitter-sweet psych pop to dreamy electronic and dark ambient – featuring some of our very own favorites from 2010, a few of them who've also got some pretty interesting releases in mind, coming up later this year.

Pines.

16 Feb 2011 — Henning Lahmann
I know. Outside it's close to zero degrees but here at NFOP we're having an insanely hazy, summery day. Well, sorry for that. But anyway, one last time, this is from Richmond's Kenny Hamilton, and though his nom de guerre Spacemonster doesn't really fit the music, this college dropout seriously knows how to come up with lush, melody-dripping tape music, with the necessary hiss and carefully washed-out vocalizing his songs feature just about everything we could ever expect from something dubbed as bedroom pop. But no offense intended, I really am stoked by Hamilton's talent that was awoken last summer after his personal life had gotten overly complicated, so do yourself a favor and buy Spacemonster's Gills EP for a Dollar over at bandcamp. We Don’t Surf.

16 Feb 2011 — Henning Lahmann
We don't know much about Bloomington, Indiana outfit We Don't Surf apart from the fact that, well, they don't surf. The band's bio on their myspace plainly informs us that we're dealing with musicians who don't surf but wish they surfed so they sing about their not surfing, and on Facebook we're blessed with the information that their hometown is "not the beach", which all kinda sounds compelling to us. In fact, the only thing we would like to know is how they've managed to record such a ridiculously beautiful and authentic-sounding 60s Mexican throwback piece like La Cuenta de Fernando Ramos EP, but on the other hand, obviously we weren't curious enough to ask either. So suffice it to add that all their stuff is available on bandcamp. And oh yeah, we really dig this. We Don't Surf - I Hate Everything We Don't Surf - Yo No Quiero Luz Read more →
