Kinlaw “Alone”/“Causesleep”

We've been following Bristol producer Kinlaw's steady progress since the very beginning of 2012, and it is a pleasure to see the young producer developing a style of his own that is as much 'now' as it feels timeless. The deranged hip hop beats and off-kilter samples create a dark, gloomy atmosphere that nonetheless couldn't be further afar from generic witch house and its disciples. The new tape Chorus † Mysticus is another case in point, a nine-track transmission of slow-burning electronics that take their inspiration not only from hip hop and UK bass but just as much from post-rock or 90s charts music, resulting in a piece of cinematic outsider pop that is his most coherent and indeed best work yet.
