If you've already come across the music by Seattle resident Joey Butler, who makes delicious bass-centered ambient under the moniker Kid Smpl, you might have figured out by yourself who the young producer might count as one of his principal musical influences. Yet apart from the obvious, Butler's latest EP Escape Pod, which follows a string of mostly self-released EPs and remixes, still manages to offer more than enough to expose some real and distinct talent that is very much capable of standing on its own feet. The music is sparse, spacious, inherently dark and melancholic, and yes indeed, the recommended listening environment might be a devastated night bus at two in the morning. It's a marvellous and very promising effort, really, which you may exclusively stream in full below.
Escape Pod is out tomorrow via Hush Hush Records. Kid Smpl's proper debut LP is set to follow on the same label later this year.
Last week, The Fader premiered the amazing official video for "Pulse", made by Ben Anderson. Watch it below.
