In Adam Harper's recent piece on the leading labels of the new web-based underground for the Fader, 1080p's Richard McFarlane revealed that he keeps searching for "peripheral electronic music" that's inhabiting "the areas in-between some sort of club and anti-club dichotomy", and if anything, with fellow British Columbia project D. Tiffany, the curator has found the perfect embodiment of this aesthetic. Sporting a hazy, langurous if still slightly disturbed approach to classic house that is too light-hearted to be championed by Opal Tapes and the likes but probably would have found a home on 100% Silk just a year ago, Sophie Sweetland's music as D. Tiffany embraces all the ingredients that make us cling to this style, even though it can hardly claim any true innovativeness in the summer of 2014. Taking up topoi of last decade's tape culture hypnagogia, the artist's take on house is just straightforward and acidic enough to let us imagine dancing to this in some post-euphoric afterhour environment, but what we can definitely confirm for now is that the 50+ minute-long escapist contemplation works marvelously for sweaty summer night road trips after a day out in the country.
