Earlier this year, LA producer Anenon (pronounced Ah-ne-non), recorded a live session at The Music Gallery in Toronto. The four song set highlighted much of the producer’s post-classical instrumentation, moving through streams of piano and saxophone improvisation, and only occasionally delving into the producer’s electronic tendencies. It’s a rare occurrence to see the instrumental tendencies of a beatmaker, who tend to repurpose nearly any send they can find into their production process. The Toronto set provided a kind of look into the pre-(post?)software aspect of the artist’s output, outlining a sense of location from which his electronic productions are assembled. An origin where something that resembles classical music training can still lead to making beats.
In that regard, the recently posted setlist of nine previously unreleased beats is the other side of the coin, representing the part of the artist’s production that originates in the digital world. The result is something of a composition; the keyboard replacing the composer’s baton. Swells of instrumentation riding crescendos into the wane, as grinding percussion drives the production forward at an exact pace.
Follow anything #beats on Soundcloud and you’ll hear a thousand new pieces every day, repurposing all corners of the far-reaching scope of musical history into perfectly-timed cuts and drops. To listen to this setlist of Anenon beats is to consider the producer as first, a musician, and secondly, a software aficionado.
There isn’t much information regarding an upcoming release besides the fact that it’s the artist’s second full-length, it’s likely called “Sagrada”, and it’s scheduled via the Non-Projects label later this year. Stay tuned.
