NFOP premieres: Apneu

Today, we are extraordinarily psyched to have the honor to present the first ever NFOP premiere: Apneu.

According to FuturePop Bookings, the quartet is Amsterdam's hottest new band right now, and though we're not really familiar with one of our favourite city's music scenes (a shame, apparently), after listening to the few tunes the band has put up on their myspace we're willing to take it for granted. Without any unnecessary bleeps, synth patterns or other hipster music must-haves (save for some subtle hand-clapping, but as you'll know, we're all about hand-clapping), the music gets straight to the point, Apneu's songs are all killer hooks and not a second too long. So let's keep it short, too: NFOP is officially stoked.

As there are no promo pictures of the band available so far, Melanie Caitlin kindly provided a photograph of last month's Amsterdam show. Thanks a lot.

Yesterday, Drew from my absolute favourite Kansas cassette label Solid Melts kindly notified me of his uber-rad season kick-off comp An Empire of Fun, available as a free download.

Among the featured artists on the overall exciting lineup are CVLTS, Julian Lynch, Cloud Nothings, Vehicle Blues, and Katrina Stonehart, to name but a few. Almost 90 minutes of fuzzy and experimental lo-fi goodness, there's no way to miss this one.

Listen to some teasers below.

Lake Radio is the dark electronica side project of Cary, Illinois' 19 year old Caden Moore who's member of the new wave outfit Heavy Ghost and who used to create some kind of ambient/beat electronica as The Sky Operator. Now, Moore has made a sea change and switched to his darker side by composing slow-burning chilled out grooves that sometimes get pretty close to that currently way too much hyped thing that goes under the name "witch house" (chillwave's gloomy sister, more or less), at other times tunes that are intriguing explorations into other variations of dark electronic music.

Lake Radio has two EP's out that are available for free, you'll find the witchy Blair EP via Witch Trial (of course), slightly different The Weather can be downloaded here. The song below is taken from the Blair EP.

Listen to the latest jam of Knoxville, Tennessee's Coolrunnings I Can Be Dreamy, a new wavey dream catcher and an appropriate teaser from his upcoming Teenage Tn. And moreover, New South Wales pal Sandals aka Jarred Beeler achieves to create a totally different but equally exciting tune by adding some tropical flavours and a laid-back sunshine rhythm to Coolrunnings' original. It's his first ever published track, but after this amazing effort, I hope he won't let us wait too long for the next one.

I know I'm just about one day too late to come up with this one, but I really want to make sure you don't miss this one: Hard Mix is Noah Smith from Greenville, South Carolina, and his new tune Memories originally appeared on an amazing summer mixtape he did for Strangers in Stereo, but it was simply too good to keep hiding it between Chaka Khan and Whitney Houston. Beyond amazing.

Craft Spells is the Californian duo Justin Vallesteros and Frankie Soto, and the guys were kind enough to send over this perfect summer day of a song: Party Talk is their brand new dream pop output, and it's so lush and joyful I just can't stop listening. This is an instant classic, easily bridging 25 years of pop music, something we'll never get tired of discovering. Summer is here, it's weekend, life is good, thank you Craft Spells.

This is weird, but it is. We know next to nothing about Monster Rally, if it is a single person, or a band, where he/she/they come from, what their favourite cheese is, what keeps them awake at night. But on the other hand, it doesn't appear to matter. This is sample-heavy sunshine pop, strangely beautiful and beautifully strange, and the self-titled EP's cover says it all. You can download the whole thing for free via Monster Rally's bandcamp page (a myspace doesn't seem to exist).

Take this to the beach and put a smile on everyone's faces around you. And as a start, I'd suggest you put your feet on the desk and ask the next person you come across to get you a cocktail.

London's Hypermagic is not there to confuse you. It's not there to make you dance or sing. It won't hurt, though it probably steal time when you get lost in the slowly meandering synth patterns and the relaxed drum machine beats that are only occasionally covered by a high voice singing quietly without interrupting the overall flow. Most likely, the music has no ambitions whatsoever to change your life, but if you're willing to abandon yourself, Hypermagic's shoegaze will most probably leave you a little more free.
