Ukkonen “Viva Las Huelgas”

Elusive Finish producer Ukkonen's "Five to Three" was one of the standout tracks on No Pain In Pop's excellent The Bedroom Club II compilation which came out in January. Now, the acclaimed London imprint has readied The Ancient Tonalities Of..., Ukkonen's sophomore full-length after 2012's The Isolated Rhythms Of... (we see what you did there). "Viva Las Huelgas" is the first track to be unveiled from the LP, and like "Five to Three", it features dense, nocturnal textures juxtaposed with impelling rhythms, even if the beat is less unabashedly straightforward and 'floor-indebted than the earlier contribution to the NPIP compilation. The underlying structures are somewhat leaning towards gentle ambient techno, though the overall sonic bustle never lets the listener's ears settle. A very alluring offering by a very promising new artist.
