Premiere: Kid Smpl - Escape Pod (EP Stream).

06 Aug 2012 — Henning Lahmann
If you've already come across the music by Seattle resident Joey Butler, who makes delicious bass-centered ambient under the moniker Kid Smpl, you might have figured out by yourself who the young producer might count as one of his principal musical influences. Yet apart from the obvious, Butler's latest EP Escape Pod, which follows a string of mostly self-released EPs and remixes, still manages to offer more than enough to expose some real and distinct talent that is very much capable of standing on its own feet. The music is sparse, spacious, inherently dark and melancholic, and yes indeed, the recommended listening environment might be a devastated night bus at two in the morning. It's a marvellous and very promising effort, really, which you may exclusively stream in full below. Escape Pod is out tomorrow via Hush Hush Records. Kid Smpl's proper debut LP is set to follow on the same label later this year. Last week, The Fader premiered the amazing official video for "Pulse", made by Ben Anderson. Watch it below. Broken Twin: “Out Of Air”.

05 Aug 2012 — Tonje Thilesen
Originally posted on Ja Ja Ja Our friends at Nordic By Nature made us aware of the Copenhagen pop duo Broken Twin this morning, having released their first (and so far, only) single "Out Of Air" briefly a month ago. Accompanied by nude female vocals and with minimal use of instrumentation, you may argue that the organic simplicity behind "Out Of Air" is not exactly a new sound to add to the enormous Scandinavian musical catalogue, but then again, these girls does it with such warmth and grace you can't help but falling for their beautiful naivety. We can already predict a bright future to be ahead for these two. "Out Of Air" is a part of the four-track EP Hold On To Nothing that will be released this month on Broken Records. Stream: Teamm Jordann - Champion LP.

05 Aug 2012 — Tonje Thilesen
Back in January we heard the first excerpt from the upcoming LP of Jónó Mí Ló and L.A's internet celibrity Sean Bowie's (aka Teams) collaborative psych project Teamm Jordann, but for some reason, "Hall Of Fame" remained an almost unheard track in wait for their Champion LP. With guests such as Police Academy 6, Dick Models and the Brooklyn artist who reportedly once put seven hits of acid up her vagina, Champion is packed with funky, time traveling psychedelia. Teams' distinctive beat-crafting also shines specifically through in many of the LP's tracks, definitely leaning back on his 'older' sound more than ever, and together with the lo-fi disco of Nashville-based Police Academy 6, the result is a deadly recipe to dance music. Out now on Orange Milk Records. Weekly Retrospect 31/12

03 Aug 2012 — NFOP

A selection of tracks you should’ve been listening to this past week."That focus on timing and subtlety helps to further empower the resonant drum patterns and disembodied choir that eventually join Howard in his lament, just before he pulls himself back as the spare instrumentation makes the composition's closing statements." — Patric Fallon, Pitchfork"It's more downtempo and strangely far more accessible than previous Teengirl Fantasy tracks, offering itself up as a sort of alt-dance jam that shimmers with vocal samples and various oddities." — Tom Walters, The 405The-Drum are the perfect foil to Fay's meticulously cut-up approach, smoothing things out but not without retaining the original's unsettling, lurching quality. — Tim Gentles, Rose Quartz"Under the thick cords, minuscule blips and bloops bubble up, exhibiting the kind of attention to detail that makes Fort Romeau's tunes exceptional." — Elissa Stolman, XLR8R"In a landscape crowded with electro-girls, Kolstad stands tall – her music teems with positivity, energy and spirit." — John Rogers, Snipe

Dpony: “Delete 2”.

03 Aug 2012 — Tonje Thilesen
The NYC/LA/Boston outfit and Hooray For Earth side-project Dpony are still kicking it after their splendid debut release, finally giving us a peak at the first b-side from their psych-apocalyptic, audio/visual album Movie, as we proudly premiered back in April. "Delete 2" is a melodic first cut from the upcoming b-side EP, packed with curiosity and guitar feedback that will make delightful shivers down your spine. Future Shuttle: “Astro Curio”.

02 Aug 2012 — Henning Lahmann
After their superb debut Water's Edge from last year, Brooklyn experimental project Future Shuttle are about to release sophomore effort In To It. Unlike the almost exclusively synth-based work on their first EP, largely the brainchild of Camilla Padgitt-Coles and Jessa Farkas, advance track "Astro Curio" ultimately shows the growing relevance of flutist Lizzie Harper and percussionist Linnea Vedder aside from the live setup, a development that significantly expands the outfit's musical depth, while also leading to a seemingly more straightforward approach to composition and arrangement. The track is a compelling piece of psychedelic soundscaping, with densely layered synths and flutes that provide a pleasant and intriguingly mystifying backdrop for some aptly ethereal vocals, convincingly tied together by a very time-honoured set of hippie-esque rhythmic devices on the verge of pastiche. In a good way. In To It is out in September on New Images.
