When I beg you to stay.

I don't know. There's something about melancholic music made by lone girls with guitars that goes beyond "beautiful" or "magical". While male sorrow appears to almost inevitably lead to wallowing in miserable self-pity (and alcoholism), women more often preserve some kind of laconic pragmatism in view of the inescapable setbacks in live, a stance they are able to transform into songs that will make the listener feel the pain without ever drifting into tearjerking cheesiness, something more recently shown with perfection by artists like Tiny Vipers or the wonderful Angel Olsen.

Now, we have to add Albuquerque, New Mexico's Emma Crane who records under the moniker The Arsonist. A tune full of longing with a total lack of illusion, Shores' quiet guitar and Crane's fragile yet unshaken voice have left me spellbound and confused for days now, being aware that I've listened to one of most enchanting things I have and I will come across all year.

Boring horror.

In other news from Canada, Cecil Frena aka Gobble Gobble is back. Back from a tour across his homeland (he'll be hitting the States this week), but more importantly back with another track full of insanely mind-boggling twists and bleeps: the terrific Boring Horror is one of the brand new tunes on one of the finest mixes that've been put out this summer, Au Revoir, La Côte, compiled by our dearest friend Cameron Book from The Road Goes Ever On.

Yesterday, Thomas Michael of Edmonton's Jaded Hipster Choir sent over Misere Nostri, another amazing tune of his ever growing repertoire, and once more we're blessed with flickering samples and synths and a nervous drum track dubbed over something that appears to be rather ancient choral music, once more underlining the project's uniqueness as regards contemporary electronic music.

What can I say - this is what has to happen when the infinite creativity of two great minds conjoins. Thanks so much, Brandon and Mat, seriously, you've made our day.

New Ducktails: Hamilton Road

02 Aug 2010 — Henning Lahmann

According to Google Maps, there's exactly one Hamilton Road in the Garden State, very roughly connecting Hillsborough's public library with the Spooky Brook Golf Course, and though we don't know if Matt Mondanile is singing about this particular road or if the name's just a proxy for any street in the urban fringe, Hamilton Road is another piece of suburban summer splendour by our favourite hypnagogist, one hundred seventy four seconds of easily meandering, slightly distorted guitars and blurred vocals, in other words, exactly the signature that made us adore that guy in the first place.

Bearing in mind that we're only listening to an unmastered version of Hamilton Road, we're nonetheless stoked by the first song from Matt's upcoming Ducktails III: Arcade Dynamics, due later this year on Woodsist Records.

Worth the wait.

Our favourite Lone Star fellow Lance Smith aka Pandit returns with a perfect Sunday afternoon treat, four minutes of blissful dream pop of the shoegazey kind, Creek Bed is a splendid wall of sound built up by washed out guitars and synths heavily drenched in reverb accompanied by distant and echo-laden vocals, a piece made for reclining on a riverbank in the hazy sunlight, just watching the water flow by.

Creek Bed was produced for the highly anticipated and hopefully very soon arriving White Guys With Beards & Friends Vol. Three, so thanks a lot to Lance and WGWB's Brian Wood for letting me post this little teaser.

Regarding Pandit's upcoming full length on Lefse Records, we're gonna have to wait until January to see its release, but at least there's hope that we'll be blessed with a little cassette EP on Orchid Tapes sometime later this year.

After the wonderful albums Festive Bummer and MMR, the unbelievably prolific Miller Rodriguez aka Mickey Mickey Rourke already has another record in the pipeline. Inner Gazing will be something even more special though, as it's gonna be a collaboration album between Rodriguez and his friends, among them such rad artists as Foxes In Fiction, Raw Moans, Hooray! (not sure under which moniker, as we've reported earlier that Hooray! has been declared dead), and Craft Spells, which sounds pretty amazing.

Below, you can download the wonderful Yarn Bones (apparently not a collab) and stream Candy Cults featuring Evan Adams aka our most adored and almost NFOP regulars Top Girls - a beautifully slow and mysteriously meandering tune, warm and hazy like a summer night, and a real collaboration in the best sense of the word.
