Two People Playing Music: “Beehive”.

05 Apr 2012 — Jesse Thompson
Here's a jammy, shuffling instrumental tune by Two People Playing Music (2PPM) from their album titled For People, which was released digitally this past February. The track conjures up a sense of delight and sentimental observance, seeming to trace the ebb and flow of a passing landscape and all its dips, rises, tucks and swells. Unlike many instrumentals, this song doesn't fall prey to careless drift. It displays a thoughtful tension and melodic variance that holds your attention as it shifts and unfolds. Keyboardist Chase Hudson and drummer Sean Sullivan originally formed 2PPM in Northwest Florida with the intent "to explore the sonic boundaries between popular styles and the musical unknown [while presenting] the conscious or unconscious headspace that we all share." The duo is currently writing new material for their third effort, Desert Country and Physics, which will be released in June. Stream "Beehive" below and check out the rest of For People over at the group's bandcamp. Video: Philco Fiction - “Finally”.

04 Apr 2012 — Tonje Thilesen
All though 120 Days had to cancel their SXSW dates, there were still a few local Norwegians that made it to Austin this year, amongst them also our favourite Oslo trio Philco Fiction. Prior to SXSW they released the video below for the gorgeous "Finally" (as well as a mini-EP containing handful of tracks from Take It Personal and their 2010 EP, Give Us To The Lions) and now recently the London duo Visions Of Trees gave the same track some of their minimalistic club love. Listen and watch below. Demdike Stare: “Live at Golden Pudel Club”.

03 Apr 2012 — Henning Lahmann
While still living up north, many a night was spent in the sacred if moldy halls of Hamburg's weirdest but definitely most exciting and plainly best venue Golden Pudel Club down by the docks, infamous for endless nights of just about anything you never dared to dream about. Last year in mid-May, Manchester's Demdike Stare spent a whole weekend at the St. Pauli-based club, spinning records the first two nights (MLZ on Friday, Sean Canty on Saturday) before performing live on Sunday night. A 59-minute recording of this show has now been put out by the venue's own label Pudel Produkte, a dense and mesmerizing example of the duo's signature dark and hypnotic sonic art. Listen to an excerpt below, and get 15 Mai 2011: Live At Golden Pudel Club now here or here. King Felix: Spring01 & Spring02.

03 Apr 2012 — Henning Lahmann
While we still have to wait a bit for Laurel Halo's honestly breathtaking debut full-length Quarantine on Hyperdub, out in May, the new Mute subdivision Liberation Technologies is about to drop the Spring EP under her King Felix moniker next week, as already widely reported. Yesterday, Fact posted the second track of the 12 inch, "Spring02 ". So while you most likely have heard that one already, get ready for the amazing first cut below, aptly entitled "Spring01 " and arguably closer to Halo's material on last year's favorite Hour Logic, the change of guise notwithstanding. Needless to say, highly recommended. NFOP x Nordic By Nature: Norwegian Wave Night.

03 Apr 2012 — Henning Lahmann
We're happy to host this Friday's Norwegian Wave Night together with our dearest friends of Nordic By Nature, presenting delightful performances by two exciting and young Oslo-based acts, all-female duo MMM and all-male duo Bloksberg, about to please the Scandinavia-addicted Berlin people with beautiful, slightly melancholic electro pop in the most elaborate northern tradition (the former), and some dance-inducing stuff aptly named, well, Tækno (the latter). Before, after, and in between, we as well as the Nordic By Nature folks are gonna put on some records for your pleasure. The whole thing takes place at Marie Antoinette and starts at midnight, for further info go here. We give away two +1 guest list spots for the night if you can name your favorite Norwegian cheese in a mail to competitions@nofearofpop.net until Thursday, 3 pm. Green & Gold vol. 3

02 Apr 2012 — Holly Friedlander Liddicoat

Fourteen tracks. That’s how many I had narrowed down for the month of March. Fourteen wonderful tracks of chilled out house vibes and hip-hop beats. There were instrumentals and sample heavy tunes and tracks that just simply made you want to take all your clothes off and get downright sexy. Alas, trying to choose just five was an uphill (and clothed) battle. March saw the release of the latest instalment of Free The Beats and thus me being as spoilt for choice as an Elizabethan king at a royal banquet. A tri-monthly release of future sounds and talented Aussie youngsters, FTB 7 absolutely, undoubtedly, delivered this month. I’ve already written about Oisima’s track over at Portals and new kid Mic Mac down at East to West and was left deciding between the many, many remaining delicacies. Mic Mac’s other track One Day at a Time was a solid contender, as was Forcefields’ Driftwood, but the ambient ricochets of Dance, Candles won me over at last. Ethereal and otherworldly are the spine-tingling sounds in “Mae”, a 4.5 minute dark and ambient wonder. Dance, Candles – Mae A couple of silent weeks passed, and I thought this column would turn out to be a summation of the Free The Beat kings, but after some high and low searching (and more generally, some damn good luck) I came across this next gem. Dabbling in future garage sounds, Paradise Lost transforms this potentially dark track into a soaring wonder with the vox he incorporates. Since learning of this local Sydneysider, I’ve discovered his beautiful ability to manage the dichotomy between light and dark, combining late-night beats with heavenly vocals. If you like what you hear below, make sure to acquaint yourself well with another magnificent tune of his, “Ethereal”. Paradise Lost – So You Want to Know How I Feel My current favourite producer is another local Sydney boy, known as Network. Every track he’s put up on his Soundcloud is so lusciously produced, you could comb through them all with a fine comb and find no faults. Again, spoilt for choice, but the dissonant ringing of Lucky, combined with a London-esq. beat and a combination of vocal samples makes it the standout. Network – Lucky A Saturday night spent in paid off this weekend, as I stumbled onto Dub Temple Records and an absolutely fabulous producer on their roster that goes by the delicious (sorry, I had to) moniker of Sauce. His self-titled debut is up for free download, and in all honesty, best listened to in full. It’s one of those works that bends itself in exciting directions, but keeps a cohesive sound throughout the production, each track being needed to compliment the next. Drawing on elements of deep house and dub, Sauce also plays with his food, I mean, hip-hop elements. Mmm, tasty. Sauce – Carpaccio Coming to an end of another fine month, sitting on the breath of the first hour of morning and typing these very words, I receive a track from Australia’s prodigy child, Perth residing The Blank. Whilst anticipating a release on currently thriving label Darker Than Wax, this track “Leona” helps sedate our ever-watering mouths. Another talented producer who harnesses the female vox, Henry Ascroft’s heavier sounds take a backseat this time, as he incorporates a feminine delicacy reflected by the title of the song. Think of walking home through the rain after breaking hearts/having your heart broken. The Blank – Leona Autumn’s well and truly settling in here. The days are getting colder and the nights are arriving sooner - a few more hours of darkness to add to the ever-shortening days. Perhaps on those colder nights you need some friends to hug. Perhaps early in the morning, when you throw that scarf around your neck, you need some late night beats and heavenly vocals to get you through the day. Until next month kids. Download the mixtape here.
