Gray Things: “Girl”.

12 Oct 2012 — Henning Lahmann
We first came in contact with Mississippi-based Cats Purring disciple Thomas Cooper aka Gray Things sometime in the summer of 2011 after stumbling across his delightful psych-pop banger "Class". We don't know what he's been up to in the many months since, but we recently got the news that "Class" now has a worthy successor, the equally upbeat, sunny little pop gem "Girl", in which, well, Cooper sings about a girl. Check it out below. "Girl" is part of an EP that will be out November 19 via London-based imprint Make Mine. NFOP Recommends: Ital & Stellar OM Source at Mindpirates.

12 Oct 2012 — Henning Lahmann
One or two of you might have noticed already that Berlin is a city where a lot of things are happening. As in, every day of the week. It so happens that this modest website is based in that, ehm, vibrant place on earth, and we love being part of this amazing, ehem, "scene". However, as a site with a ridiculously small staff and considering that time is a fundamentally limited resource, we cannot and will not announce every event that might be interesting for us, or for you (apart from that, our alleged influence on the nightlife of Berlin is grossly overstated, sadly). We briefly considered initiating a "listings" section, but then again, see above, plus there are sites like this one or this one (which we both herby recommend), or (even) this one or this one, that do the job so much better than we could ever do. So please stop asking us to promote your events, that is, unless you have some good reason for doing so. Like this one, for instance: Tomorrow, our dearest friends at BL4CK M4G1CK present a night featuring two of our favourite artists at Mindpirates in Kreuzberg, and that's really something you shouldn't dare to miss out on. Ital aka Brooklyn's Daniel Martin-McCormick, who's having an extraordinary year with one excellent release on Planet Mu already and another one forthcoming, will perform live while being visually supported by "the cosmically warped analog hall of mirrors VJing of Innergaze's Aurora Halal". Christelle Gualdi aka Stellar OM Source, whose superb Image Over Image 12 inch is out on Rush Hour, returns to town once again to create her unique and unmatched synthesised sonic universe, which alone is reason enough for joining the night. 92 Points/Boiler Room's Daniel Adeyemi (supported by Aanisa Ru's projections) and PURGE's xorzyzt are going to DJ. Go here for more info and RSVP. Read more → One or two of you might have noticed already that Berlin is a city where a lot of things are happening. As in, every day of the week. Olan Mill: “Pampas (Rurre)”.

12 Oct 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Some contemplative sounds to start your beautifully sunny Friday morning (well, at least here in Berlin) courtesy of British composer Alex Smalley aka Olan Mill, whose third full-length Home is a delightfully restrained effort on the intersection of neo-classical and ambient, quite easy on the ears yet not without enough twists and refined details in the arrangement - that features soprano Patricia Boynton and an ensemble of musicians playing woodwind, piano, pipe organ and violin alongside Smalley's own guitar play and field recordings - to keep the listener's attention. Home is out now on Preservation, the fifth work in Preservation’s limited edition CD series Circa for 2012. 300 copies, order over here. Stream: RxRy - “c.STRS”.

11 Oct 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Over the last two years, enigmatic artist RxRy has kept us in suspense with a string of outstanding if understated and largely overlooked releases that delved deep into the forgotten territories of static noise, effortlessly forming them into etudes of sublime beauty. Now, the project, which was one of the many guises of NFOP darling Matthew Sage, has been laid to rest, but not before drawing its last breath with c.STRS, another mournful transmission of ambient electronics, a slow-burning suite that is probably RxRy's most mature and accomplished work yet. As every proper felo de se, it comes with a farewell note attached, which reads as follows: PING (final): Tonight is the last shadow I won't see. Everything else I wrote is untrue. As is what follows. The moon loops, but the sun slowly pushes out and towards us. Any light is inevitable, so long as our planet spins. No matter the force I exerted from this desk wherever it was, the light will rise everywhere. In spite of all my efforts, no night lasts forever. A grin. A thin line between the sun and the sky. A reality / disarmed. A charming character. A conceit. I long for a warm signal, without the veil. read: GOODNIGHT / GOODLUCK / GOODBYE c.STRS rises tomorrow...my website will explain more than i can from where i am. This is the last one, and the biggest. and I push off from the coil, when the sun rises... ...best / last There's some more "explanation" over here, and a free download of c.STRS should appear soon on this site. Thanks Matt, your wonderful mystery will be missed. Stream c.STRS below. Some copies of the highly recommended A are available via Matt's own Patient Sounds. Get yours over here. Update: Patient Sounds, which really and seriously is our favourite little cassette label out there, and which has been with us virtually forever (just look at this), needs our/your help to expand a bit, which is why the folks have started a Kickstarter in order to raise the amount of Dollars needed for their amazing plans. So we hereby strongly recommend you head over here right now, check out what they have to say, and support their endeavour. Thanks. Premiere: Discoverer - “Personal Clone”.

11 Oct 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Discoverer is the solo work of Kansas City resident Brandon Knocke, a project initiated to explore and expose the hidden fringes of modern electronica by means of meticulously stripping the structures of synth-driven music to their very core. What remains is a delicate version of cathartic pop that sports a certain appeal of retro-futuristic otherworldliness, carefully layered constructions and diligently textured compositions whose sublime craft no disciple of the Berlin School of electronic music could've ever surpassed. In anticipation of Discoverer's sophomore release Tunnels, Digitalis is offering the first single "Personal Clone" as a free download along with the non-album b-side "Memories". Take a listen to both tracks below and get them over here. Tunnels is out soon via Digitalis. Discoverer's stellar debut Build a Base, released by Overland Shark, is available for free download right here. Holly Herndon: “Fade”.

11 Oct 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Tennessee native and sometime Berlin resident Holly Herndon will release her much-anticipated proper debut soon, finally unleashing her dazzling blend of avant dance and modern composition. "Fade", the first full track to be revealed, perfectly encapsulates the young artist's approach, a mind-boggling tune that comes across as at once embracing dancefloor and a twisted version of contemporary chamber pop, a track that will immediately send shivers of excitement down your spine. Take a listen below. Movement is out November 13 via RVNG Intl. Love Inks: “Magazine Street”.

11 Oct 2012 — Henning Lahmann
Lovely Austin, Texas trio Love Inks, responsible for the insanely addictive pop gem "Blackeye" last year, are about to return with their sophomore full-length which will probably arrive sometime early next year. Until then you may already listen to one of the new songs, the lush and dreamy "Magazine Street" that seamlessly takes up the debut's strengths. Momentform: “Yearn EP”.

09 Oct 2012 — Henning Lahmann
The first release by promising brand new London imprint New Ideals, Momentform's Yearn EP is a stark, haunting four-track transmission of deepest, coldest minimal synth, skilfully and faithfully executed by the Paris-based outfit which has been in operation since 2010. The gritty, fuzzy "Cecilia" is especially compelling, bringing to fruition the band's mother tongue's sinister potential. Listen to the whole EP below. Yearn is out October 18. Limited edition of 100, pre-order the cassette now over here.
